Post SC Upgrades, Leave stock or ?

My 80-SC is pretty stock and I'm wondering how you guys feel about a car with upgrades. I was going to upgrade the headlights awhile back and just could'nt do it. It just didn't look right on a car with the old style fogs and no front spoiler.
I would like to ad a front spoiler though as they did come stock with them.
I guess my question is,is it a postive or a negative to change an SC's front end to say a Carrera style or just leave it stock?

Bob:

It's your money and your car, so you should be able to do whatever you want.

But, I kinda think it's great to still see stock cars once and awhile, especially SC and 3.2's that don't have tons of modifications done.

Also, if you plan to sell the car soon, keeping a car stock helps for resale. If you do make changes, keep the stock parts for the next owner to choose if they want to return the car back to stock. A 3.2 valance on an SC might cause potential buyers to question why that particular part was replaced.

Also, I think everybody is pretty used to spoiler modifications, new steering wheels, shift *****, etc, so those type of mods probably don't detract much from values. It's the 964 body kits on SC's, for example, that really subtract value.

Just my $.02

Bob:

I have done some mods to my SC. Most of them have been performance enhancements and changes that I have made have been for my own enjoyment and safety.

I am not a big fan of updating headlights, body parts or trim pieces. To each their own.

Regarding the modifications to your chin, why not bolt on a simple carrera chin spoiler. It is a simple bolt on to our existing valance. No painting, fitting or mess. Drill a few holes (I think 5) in your existing valance and two more below the bumper bellows and you're done.

The part and hardware kit can be purchased from Porsche $$$$$ or places like Vertex $ (where I got mine.) I replaced my Smile Strip at the same time and added the chin spoiler in less than four hours. It is easier to install the chin spoiler with a partial drop of the valance.

The entire process was thoroughly detailed in Excellence Magazine a few years ago.

If you DE your car, you SHOULD NOT add a chin spoiler without a tail. This can make your car unstable at high speed.

I opted for an early turbo tail. It is less massive than a whale tail and almost correct for the car.

The car looks and handles great with its new additions.

I hope this helped.

I follow your line of thought in respect to updating the body ...Was gonna do the flush fogs, but- my car's an SC, not a Carrera. That's one of the characteristics of this era of car. And it is, a distinctive era. I guess if I want a Carrera look, I'll buy the real article, not build a facade...

It looks good period - correct with protruding fogs, H-4's are on these things in Europe and it does look better, so that's OK in my book. (Duh, they're on my car )

Not a big fan of doing later body mods - guess it's the feeling of trying to tart up something that isn't - like faking.

Here is a before and after on my SC.Haven't done the H4 upgrade yet, but will shortly. If you're worried about re-sale, just do the mods you want that are bolt on and keep the stock parts to re-install. My opinion is that the value of a 911 done with tasteful modifications is probably enhanced. By that, I'm not talking about race mods or silly paint schemes, but accepted/common upgrades (H4, front rubber lip) that many people do to their cars. I'm just going about making the car what I want it to be, and if I ever sell it, will assume it's done in good enough taste to appeal to others.
Best,
Mark

Bob...like many said, it's your baby, you rock it...anyway, I don't think putting the H4's would hurt...my '82 SC is all stock except for stereo/930S wheel/momo shift ****...I wouldn't do the Carrera front end style...it's a beauty just as it is...

Thanks for the replys and GREAT pic's. The Renn forum is a great new tool to bounce ideas around.
I'm going to pass on a Carrera valance, but will be adding a spoiler and thought I might have the valance painted along with the rocker panels as black really shows the paint chips.
I was thinking of just removing these pieces and taking them in for paint? or should I just have them sprayed on the car?
Marc's car sure looks nice at speed.
Thanks guys

Hello,
I would definitely not add the chin spoiler w/o a rear spoiler. Alone it reduces front lift and adds significant amounts of lift to the rear, making the car more prone to high speed oversteer--precisely what you don't want. Also, they never came stock with the chin spoiler alone. See Paul Frere's great book "911 Story", complete with factory windtunnel tests.

I agree. The chin spoiler is a nice addition. FYI it was a factory option as early as 1975. The euro headlights are great too both in looks and performance. Go for it bob!! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Hey Mark. Did you repaint your car since the original photo or was it just in need of a buff job? It looks great now BTW.

I've been considering another tail on my SC and was thinking Duck. It looks great.

Thumbs up

Mark,

Your car looks great with the Duck tail. It blends the best of the 70's with the best of the 80's. I am not a big fan of the chrome fuchs, but your car is changing my mind.

I went with a Post-'83 valance (valence??), because I liked the look of the recessed foglights. I also wanted--but never got around to--doing the headlight conversion and adding a ducktail.

Still think those ducktails are tres cool!
Cheers,
Chris

BTW I don't think it is a big deal to add the front chin spoiler w/o the supposed requisite tail. I believe all post '83's had the chin spoiler as at least an option.

Noel,
Those pics are from 2 different cameras with 2 different lightings. It's the same paint job - no buffing either. Just shows how digital cameras can change a look.
