Default Best books for repair/maintenance.

What are the best books to buy for doing repair and maintenance on our older 911s? I know there are books you can order from Porsche but these are like $200.00 right?
Are there good alternatives to these? I am looking for books that are for the basic stuff all the way to engine rebuilding. I do not have any tech books for the 911 currently.

Thanks
Michael

I have seen the 1978-83 911Sc manuals in two dif book forms....color cover and non color cover. Is there a dif in the books edition? Or did they just make a fancier version you pay more for. Prices seem to range from $80 with free shipping to $95 plus $10 for shipping.

Between the Bentley book and "101 Projects for your Porsche," by Wayne Dempsey, you'll have most (if not all) of your DIY projects covered. Dempsey has a separate engine rebuilding book, too.

Have fun!

i like wayne dempseys 101 projects for your porsche 911 also. kinda like a cookery book in a way. detailing ingredients (parts and tools you need for the job), how long it takes, skill needed for each job, pictures, hints and tips etc. really good for an idiot like me.
really cheap too.
found it really usable and friendly. it doesnt ignore f models either. that together with a bentley or haynes and you're well covered i think.

The Bentley hands down .. buy before any other book. The 101 is good for nice little projects, but for a reference for the car nothing beats the bentley imo

Thanks for the input guys. By the way...I am not needing to rebuild my engine...yet....but I was thinking about rebuilding my 915. I have also noticed that my clutch pedal feels like it might be going. It disengages about 2" off the floor. I also wanted to start cleaning things up a bit, and just going through the car as a whole.

Yep, I was thinking about getting that one off ebay...but I was curious if this was an older version because the newer ones have a dif cover.

Michael: I don't know about other manuals (I'm lucky enough to have a complete set of factory manuals that were extras at my shop), and I know that they are hideously expensive, but if you keep an eye on eBay for those you might win big!

Yeah new they are like $800.00 for my car. I have actually seen them go as cheap as $200 on ebay. Later on if I saw a set for cheap I would buy them just to have them. In the mean time I will buy the Bentley.

I only have one problem with working on my car...and thats the thought of me getting into something and ending up with a long drawn out process. I do not use my car as a daily but I do drive it ALOT. The thought of not being able to just get in it when I want to makes me hesitate doing projects. I always said that "once" the engine needed a rebuild I would tackle it myself.....and as you know Pete....my car does not have the upgraded tensioners.

When you're ready to do those tensioners let me know!! My car got to 192K miles on the originals, and still were not making noise, but because I had to replace the cams I just couldn't put new "old-style" units back in!

I sold a set of factory manuals on Ebay some time back. It's my understanding that Porsche plans to republish a bunch of those. More modern cars can be obtained on disk.

Not legally. Other than PET, AFAIK Porsche has never released Workshop Manuals on CD so any you find are illegal -- usually poor quality pdf scans.
