I would second the 3.6swap but with the G50 tranny too. Stock times to 60 for a 964 are in the 5.5 or so second range and that is for a pretty porky car. In the lighter Carrera it would be very very close to somewhere in the high 4 second range. To go deeper into the 4 second bracket, if that is your want then you could attack it two ways. More horsepower (cubic dollars!) or a close ratio gearset and mild engine mods (also not cheap). If you get anywhere close to your goal (which is doable if you are wrenching yourself) it should be a very entertaining package. With a car capable of 4 sec to 60 dont forget about the brakes! Good Luck.

The one instance where I timed it came in at 4.5 seconds. This was with a 7:31 915. I've since switched to different gearing, which includes a taller 2nd.

Guys with lighter cars are in the low 4's with a 3.6. Weight and gearing are the keys to improving on the stock 964/993 acceleration numbers.

But other platforms will get you lower straight-line times for a lot less money. With a 911, you've got to figure on 915 and CV joint repairs/replacements if you're going to do repeated launches. And I don't think it's possible to do both a 3.6 and a G50 swap for $10,000.

JABSEA,

Exactly.

The advice I give new husbands is when dealing with a difference of opinion, "Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?"

Jack,

I don't plan repeated launches. Just a once in awhile thing. I want the capability on demand. Rolling acceleration is actually of equal if not greater importance to me.

As for braking I am running PF track/street pads with OEM rotors and the combination did well at VIR.

Thanks to all for the advice. Keep it coming. I need a doable plan of attack. First, second third etc. The budget can be stretched but not infinitely so.

First I need to decide whether more cubic inches or stay with what I have and go turbine. Pros and cons. Cost vs benefit. Should I polish the intake path and coat valves and exhaust manifold surfaces or does the HP gain not justify the work. That sort of stuff. I don't want to have to change plans because of a poor plan.

Default So happy w/ my slow '75 911

I know how to get better 0 - 60 times, the handling of a Porsche, and save lots of money.....

I'll trade you for my 78' Euro 5spd- 105,000 on the clock
with LSD and a 4.5 ltr. Silber paint will be new in May,
Black interior, and oh yeah - it WILL beat the pants off the early 911 from 0 - 60! I'll drive to SITM - you drive home! She's my daily driver

did I mention it's a 928

Hmmm replacement engine/transmission or rebuild old.

Thanks for all the input.

Is there a group as in race team, engine builder, shop, mod experts etc that can help me with this decision? Maybe some Porsche team (chief) mechanic, driver or business owner that doesn't mind talking with me. I can tell him/her what I want to achieve and they can give me a plan for getting there based on my budget.

Cant say anyone has embarrassed me to 60mph. I have had plenty of everything come up beside me and rev the motor and take off with the green light. I just ease off in first like I normally do......but try and catch me on the on-ramp.
I've said this before on other Porsche forums, and been told I don't know what I'm talking about. I didn't go back, and I couldn't agree with what you have said more.

BTW, this has to be experienced with the windows down, because it's an aural feast, that *never* fails to make my head spin. I don't get the same thing from a stand.

You can do what I did. It would cost alittle more than 10,000. Put a worked turbo motor in there and fiberglass the whole car and put a shorter geared turbo 4 speed tranny in there. I love the car but it hurt my wallet big time.

Check out a copy of Excellence magazine: the issue prior to the current one, about an "cone killing SC" article written by Zach Mayne.

This San Diego mechanic has taken an SC roller; redone a 964 engine, and re-geared the trans to make it one-fast-car. This car regularly gets TTOD at autocrosses and big-track events over turbo's, GT-2's, GT-3's, and heavily modified 914's/911's (the drivers are no slackers, I might add). The combination of higher HP, light-car, and re-worked trans makes this one quick car.

The mechanic is Mr. Kinninger, and the car is the Blue "Smurf-mobile." You can check it out at PCASDR.ORG and go to "pictures", or the forum.

This car was purchased and built for well under $70K.

This all leads me to the point: finding a 3.6L and doing a little extra work on the trans will pay you in great, reliable speed, balance, and Porsche engine you can handle.

As for zero-to-60 in 4 seconds: How many NHRA National Champions have been Porsches? IMHO these cars are not meant for drags.

Good luck with your project.

Do your own work.

Lighten car to 2300 lbs.

Rebuild or swap trans $1500, bore stock cylinders to 3.4 w J&E pistons $2k, hot regrind cams $500, up grade rod bolts & valve springs $600, Misc machine work & parts $1600, headers & flowmaster muffler $1k, port manifold & TB, $800, custom SW chip $500. Net Apx 285+ hp.

Your 3.4 RS would spank most 930's.

Has anyone done business with protomotive.com?
