Default What can $10,000 do for my tired 84?

She sits in the back yard under a cover with grass and birds for company.

I could not fix last year's binding gear issue and have yet to delivered the car to the dealership to let them cut and scrape their hands feeding out more cable.

My dreams to build a high performance kit car has not died but I was thinking - Is it realistic both financially and mechanically to achieve four (or so) second 0-60 mph times with this car? I would do the work.

I mentioned $10,000 in the title of this post because for twice that I can buy that kit -less the engine that will do what I want. I miss driving the 911 but don't miss being out run by things like Ford SVT pickups and such. Embarrassing.

I don't plan on getting rid of the car just want to put some steam in her stride. I can take them in the turns but straight line? I stick to the right lane.

Thanks,

Reg

84 Targa, 3.2L.

first off...remove the inner CV joints from the tranny so you have a roller. It's six bolts on either side and a smack with a rubber hammer.

The 4 second 0-60 has to be a joke. Doable for $50,000 but not much less. For less than half that I have 6 second 0-60 with the rest of the stock 3.2 guys and that is wicked fast. I don't think the Porsche family had street racing in mind when they built this car.

Well, from my experience... $10k buys you a clutch & trans rebuild, CV's done over, full suspension & brakes, align & corner balance, maybe some exhaust mods, and some tires for your '84.

I have a new cab top, seals, and headliner left, and then I'm pretty much set for the next 3-4 years. I hope.

I didn't mean 4 seconds for $10k. It was a second question. I haven't seen anything with 4 second 0 - 60 mph times for <$100,000, that wasn't home built.

The 911 was not designed as a 0-60 car. Some people do it, but it's not particularly cost-effective.

Jack, do you have any idea of your 0-60 time?

Its not embarrassing to get beat by a Lightning...they are very quick. Anything short of a Modded 930 or a newer Twin Turbo is going to get beat by a Lightning. Hell, almost all of the newer soccer mom SUV's will out run an old 911 to 60mph.

Cant say anyone has embarrassed me to 60mph. I have had plenty of everything come up beside me and rev the motor and take off with the green light. I just ease off in first like I normally do......but try and catch me on the on-ramp.

We don't have such things as Ford Lightnings here in Ireland (I don't even know what one is) although we do have plenty of other cars which can out accelerate my '84 to 60mph, such as Evo's and Impressa WRX's etc. I just leave them to it - if I really wanted to out accelerate them I would just buy a motorbike.

Anyway, as regards the subject of this thread, for a 10K budget couldn't you drop a 3.6 in it? Surely that would give a 0-60 time of not much more than 4 seconds - if you didn't mind rebuilding your 915 fairly frequently that is.

What is 0 to 60 of a 3.6?

Anyone?

If you are building kit cars you must be able to do fab work & motor building. If the $10k is for parts you could build one nasty car.

I'd first concider what is being said above. Make it a proper 3.2 RS lt wt so to speak. 2200-2400 lbs, 250hp, good brakes & suspention. Find a good used LSD 915, sell your broken trans of just spring for a proper rebuild. Check your linkage first to see if that was not the problem. Could sell off fenders, hood, bumpers and go all lt wt fiber replacements if you want. Keep your Fuchs and put supper sticky tires on them. Sell off your interior. Add Shell seats, RS door pannels & carpet kit.

For a more wild build. Do your suspention & brakes first, lighten it next. Then the crazy stuff:

Option 1: Sell your motor & trans for cash to pay for the brakes and suspention. Use the $10k so source a 993 motor w 6 spd and get the oil cooling system, brain & motor wire harnes, shifter & linkage. You would have to convert to coil over's out back and cut away part of the shift tunnel. 300hp with 6 gears could be fun.

Option 2:Turbo your car. A set of 8/1 J&E pistions & turbo is $2k. The trans is the weak part. Have it built with a reinforsed side plate by somone in the know. Or, find a 76/77 turbo trans, or a 964 short bell housing conversion kit. Do the work yourself and a 400+hp monster is possable.

Bench racing is fun to...

Great advice. An outline of how to do what I want. Excellent.

Also I want to retain the seat(s) since the wife loves day trips in the Porsche therefore keeping the seat(s) will keep her happy. We all know the chemical reaction of mixing an unhappy wife with a $$$$ car project.

Thanks,

Reg
