C1...

A recent thread has piqued my curiosity. A poster refers to a 3.2 liter Carrera as a C1; I've never heard the term used and I was wondering if this was correct, or considered acceptable, in some countries outside the U.S. My understanding of the names is that the C2 (964) is called that to differentiate it, as a 2-wheel drive car, from its brother the C4, a 4-wheel drive car, and not as a successor to something called a C1. I would love to learn if anyone else out there calls 3.2 liter Carreras C1s! (In no way do I want the poster to feel badly, I'm just curious about this!)

John you win. Pete come on. Pete, you are the ultimate F1 fan and you are a fan of racing in general and you didn't have the 962 in mind. I know, I know, it isn't exactly a street car. Not exactly a carrera. I have been known to drive mine like a 962. I still don't think that is the C1 you are talking about though. Who knows?

"I'm good with C1 for Carrera."
I'm not. The 911 w/ 3.2 was named Carrera when Porsche manufactured it, and has always been known as such. I have never heard or read of it being referred to as a C1, not by the factory or by its owners. C1 has never been a common usage, that is certain. I suspect it may be recently introduced... by C2/C4 owners who are C2/C4-centric in their Porsche world-view, or by those ignorant of the 911 model & its history, or by some parts operation that thinks it is a proper way to ID models on their on-line parts catalog (they will not be my supplier).
To paraphrase Patrick Henry, "I care not by what name others may call theirs, but as for me, I shall call my '87 911 a Carrera."
