Default Another no-joke...

Well, my attempt to negotiate the purchase of the 912 that I've previously mentioned has failed. The car's owner has decided to do some level of repair to it on his own, and it appears that there is no chance for me to buy and restore it. The bright side? I'm taking my SC off the market because now there is no reason to sell it. For those of you who have expressed interest in the car, I apologize, but this development actually surprised me. Technically, the 912 will be a challenge to restore, and for the car's sake I surely hope that its owner finds the right people to work with. Thanks to all of you who have offered support and encouragement, I think that I might drive the car over to Willow Springs for the VARA event this weekend!

I don't think the 912 deal is off.

Yep, its owner dreams of the day when he can throw his golf clubs in the back and drive it to the country club. What can I say? The car belongs in a museum, maybe even Pebble Beach or similar, but every owner has a right to use his car as he chooses to. Oh well, it's still nice and cool up here and I took the SC for a really nice drive last Sunday - very sweet!

Pete, what makes the 912 that you're talking about eligible for a museum or concours? I'm sorry if I'm not up on the conversation. Maybe you can just post a link to your previous description of it.

Hester: The 912 is VIN 450002 - the 2nd oldest in existence, and owned by the Porsche family the first year of its life (documented). What's interesting, try as I might I've been unable to find #1, so this might be the oldest! The car is rust free, fitted with its original trans, engine, even its Solex carbs with its very unique early-style air filters...

dshepp: I can't remember when I put it up, but I think that it was sometime in 10/07...

Pete,

I am disappointed for you, and also the rest of us who looked forward to the vicarious unfolding enjoyment of a restoration (more like resurrection?) of what is arguably the premier, as far as you're concerned, 912 being performed by arguably the premier P-car mechanical authority, as far as we're concerned.

Don't worry about it Pete. I say you put another 200K on the SC then it will be eligible for a museum and for far better reason; actually being used like it's supposed to!

That's a bummer.

At least to still have the SC.

So true! Now I'm really glad that the SC didn't sell. I had already put in place who was going to do the body & paint, as well as the interior of the 912. We've got sources for the original Houndstooth seat panels, the correct headliner material, even the original carpet! It would have been a great project to oversee (kind of like buying a new car but being allowed to watch it get built), and I'm sure that my old shop would have gladly helped with any needed mechanical repairs (like pulling and fixing the gas tank, resealing brake calipers, etc.) - "bummer" is right!

Would it be too presumptuous to forward some of these ideas to the old guy...just as friendly hints about how to do this right.
