Default 1980 sc going home

A friend of mine who owned an sc for 17 years recently responded to an add from a dealer in the San Francisco Bay Area looking for clean 911's to export back to Germany. He ended up selling his car to this person who said there is a huge demand in Europe for rust free clean 911's from California despite all the costs involved with shipping and import fees. I am sure the strong Euro works in their favor as well. I lived in Germany and realize that their weather is pretty hard on cars so I assume not a lot of them survive in good condition all these years over there. So, does this mean we will be competing with these people for nice cars in the years to come? Curt

Yup.

I noticed a few clean 914-6's and plenty of 356's are being shipped back to Europe and Japan.

Same things has been happening for years with the earlyy VW's and other collectible cars.

Curt: It would be great to learn more details, if your friend can provide them. Departure port, arrival port in Europe, shipping cost, taxes (value-based or other), dealer's name (company or individual), who handled transportation to the docks (flatbed, ground tow), how was payment made, was a fair price paid, etc...

Pete!...dont sell your car cheap.....This just adds more value to our cars. The less clean cars that are here in the States will surely allow us to raise our prices when selling.

I had lunch with a fellow rennlister that really wanted my car badly to do the same thing. I didn't believe all his stories about experting as many cars as he claimed, but it is happening.

For the record, to date no one has contacted me with a plan like this in mind. Because my car is turn-key it would probably be a really easy transaction for a broker.

While I would have no idea about the numbers being exported, I sold my TR6 for export to Europe in 1985....
I guess they started with Triumphs at an earlier date because they rust quicker

Pete,

You might have to raise the price of you SC.

Here is a an SC listed for $33,500

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/618511346.html

Only $21,000 Euros on the other side of the Atlantic.

Peter, I just got back from talking to my friend and these are some of the details. It is a 1982 and not a 1980 to begin with. It is a coup with 105,000 on the clock with a top end rebuild. The car was real straight and totally stock. The exporter is Matthias Sonnen who owns a Porsche dealership in Mill Valley (Sonnen Porsche) which is a upscale community just north of San Francisco. He and his son Peter saw his for sale add, contacted him liked the car and did the deal. I believe it changed hands for about $11,500. They buy air cooled good condition 1980's and perhaps earlier cars. These cars must go for a lot more in Europe to pay that amount, pay the import fees and the shipping and still make money? I have two numbers to call 415-460-4100 and 415 519-3322. Curt

John: Oh my, I would love to see a series of decent photos for that car! Just a few little cosmetic details and it's good to go as a concours car, you'd think for $30K+ the seller could do those "little" items .

If somebody would contract the purchase of my car for thirty grand I'd rebuild the motor and trans for them if that's what they wanted !!

I think that I'll go to the classifieds now - what do you think, $25,950 OK ?

My old 81sc was just for sale on Ebay. One of the two bidders was from Europe. Didn't met the reserve.

When I was growing up as a kid my next fave car besides the 911 was the TR6.
These things do bring good money. Very spirited car.

firemed, judging by the avatar they better hurry with the sharks!

go back and read the story about Red67's friend that almost plopped down $30,000 US for a rust bucket before I talked him out of it. Imagine opening the shipping container to find a silver and rust color longhood targa really only worth about $5,000 in parts. Someday I'll have the guts to say who was selling the car, but for now I may still want........oh never mind
