Default The ultimate tire review thread...

I apologize if this has already been done and is out there somewhere, but after staying up way too late again trying to decide what new shoes I should put on my baby, I am still without a choice. I have also been on the tirerack and other sites reading their reviews, but honestly, while some are OK, I think most would not apply much to 911 drivers.

Also, tires change a lot year to year, so maybe a running thread on this topic will be helpful to others besides me.

That in mind. It is time for new shoes. I am running standard 6/7 x 16 Fuchs. I know not everyone has the same size wheel, so how about we do it in a standard format for each post, as follows (if anyone thinks the stuff listed below should be modified, please PM me - I am not a tire expert)

Toyo Proxis4 were new when I purchased the car 15 months and 15,000 miles ago. Very little sign of wear. Very sticky. 6/7 x 16 on Fuchs. (off the record) very stable at 150+

Wheel Sizes: 6/7 x 16

Tire sizes: 205/55 ZR16(F)...225/50 ZR16(R)

911 model year: '82

Tire make: Bridgestone

Tire model: Potenza RE 750

Price paid: $724.11 (includes 8.25% sales tax, hazardous waste, valve stems, mount & balance)

Where purchased from: Stokes Tire, Santa Monica, CA

Majority of use (track, street): Street

Mileage on tires at time of review: Approx. <5K

Rate the following 1-10, 1 being worst, 10 being best:

Dry Straightline Traction: Directional stability? Braking? Acceleration? Alignment settings will also affect this category.

Dry Cornering: Good - 8

Wet Straightline Traction: Same as "Dry"

Wet Cornering: Good - 8

Sidewall Rollover: N/A

Wear(mileage): UNK - 10 (so far)

Noise: Acceptable - 7

Comfort: Acceptable - 6

Overall Street Rating: Good - 8 (Based on excellent braking characteristics)

Overall Track Rating: N/A

Comments: The experience started off on the wrong foot, the initial balance job was terrible. The tires were also extremely harsh/noisy when new, but once the tires were rebalanced and had 500 + miles on them they settled in and I find them to be perfect for my use. They are very good regarding normal air loss, which has been minimal, and they are also surprisingly resistant to developing flat spots if the car isn't driven for a few weeks.

Wheel Sizes: 6 & 7

Tire sizes: 205/55 16 and 225/50 16

911 model year: 1984 Coupe

Tire make: Khumo

Tire model: Ecsta MX

Price paid: On car at purchase with 5000 miles on them from new.

Majority of use (track, street): Street only, daily driver on nice days, no track events and very little abuse has been given to these tires. My 911 is aligned perfectly and has fresh suspension components.

Mileage on tires at time of review: 15,000

Rate the following 1-10, 1 being worst, 10 being best:

Dry Straightline Traction: 9

Dry Cornering: 9

Wet Straightline Traction: N/A (never driven car in the rain)

Wet Cornering: N/A

Sidewall Rollover: 9

Wear(mileage): 8 - I don't expect rear tires on a 911 to last all that long. The rears on my car have maybe another 2000 to 3000 left in them. The fronts still have lots tread depth yet.

Noise: 7 - Moderate

Comfort: 6-7 Flat spotting is common at this age/mileage and it takes ~5 miles of driving to get them to even out. They feel hard in cooler temps until really warmed up. They are high performance tires, so a lot of road imperfections are transmitted. Obviously it gets worse as the tire wears.

Overall Street Rating: 7-8

Overall Track Rating: N/A

Comments: These tires are a great handling, predictable, stable and high performance tire on the street. On cooler spring and fall days, they take a bit of time to warm up, but once a few miles have been put on them, they stick exceptionally well. They live up to their max performance description. The tires look great on a 911 as well. Not that it matters for driving purposes, but I've had several positive comments at concours about the looks of them.

At about 13,000 miles I had a the rears measured for run out by a very knowledgeable tire technician, and they have enough run out (they are no longer round) in them that they should be replaced. The rears are not down to the wear bars yet, but getting close. I might get 17K out of the rears, but most likely I'll replace them very soon when the car comes out of storage here in spring. A great budget tire at $80 to $85 per tire, but now that the price seems to be creaping to $90 and above, another $100 or so might buy a better set of tires. If you are really watching pennies and need a very high performance tire for the street, this is a good alternative. They perform well for the first 10,000 miles or so. The flat spotting issue and early runout problem that has developed will make me replace them with a more expensive tire the next time around.

Hope this helps,

Jay

Comments: The car had Dunlop sp 8000s(?) when I bought it. These tires made a huge difference in the speed I could carry through corners up in the mountains. Grip is amazing.. when they break loose it's nice and gradual. Flat spotting resistance seems good as well since my car sits in the garage during rainy periods and is only driven on weekends usually. The rare times I've been caught out in the CA rain they behaved very well for summer tires. I'm very pleased with them and will probably buy them again when these wear out. But I can only compare them to the old dunlops on the car so my ratings may be on the high end.

Tire sizes: 205/55 ZR16(F)...225/50 ZR16(R)

911 model year: '83

Tire make: BF Goodrich

Tire model: G-Force Sport

You can get a set of 4 mounted and balanced for just over $400.00

It is a little advertised fact that these are the same street tires used in the Skip Barber Race Series on the R/T 2000 open wheeled formula cars for their Regional, National and Masters race series at race tracks all over the country.
