Talking Just put a down payment on my training wheels today

My 1977 911.

I can't believe I bought my first 911. I guess I could still back out and loose my down payment. I think it's a gift or a money pit- I guess I'll find out soon enough.

It needs some TLC including a some interior and paint/body work but structurally I think it's fine, and mechanics well - the local repair shop selling the car bought the car cheap because of a burned up engine. We think they used this car to train a new mechanic to rebuild an engine. The owner said they spent quality time late nights rebuilding this car.

The bottom end crankshaft (pulley?) was totally burned out. He showed it to me. Anyway it is a total rebuild (from top to bottom) and it has all the updates and so many parts new, including a new clutch and transmission rebuild 10K ago. The rebuilt engine was put in 50K ago from a 1981. As the shop put it - I told the guy to fix the oil leak and he didn't - and see what happens.

So we will see - I paid $9,500 for it - again we will see how the body works out - and new interior. It’s kind of ugly 70s colors. It has 160K but who cares it is a new motor, clutch and fixed transmission.

I'm thinking I have another 3 to 5K, including new seat covers, carpet, headliner under the Targa top and the paint repair. It will never be a concours car but darn that engine is sooo smooth..

So I call it my training wheels.

rpmoore2, as you get to know your car and you begin to want to make changes try shopping at Performance Products and Pelican Parts. You may find little things to do. Your money will be much better spent on restoration than on performance modifications. Make it stock and her value will go up. After all, all 911 are $20,000 cars.

Seems like a good deal to me. Other than about $300 for a passenger mirror, what more could it really NEED?!

Default Brought the car home tonight

I had to double check the Targa Top and under carriage this afternoon and it looks pretty solid. Frame looks good and the Targa Top only needs to be refurbished.

From what I can tell there were no accidents (at least major ones) and all panels line up. I just have some minor body work to take care of. I have to remind myself it is a 30year old car and the price I paid.

So here are my planned changes.
1. I plan on replacing carpet and front seat covers. So far the quote is $600 for the seats. I am not sure about the carpet price yet. Any thoughts?

2. Then do some minor body and paint work. Still waiting on price. I could wait a year on this and just enjoy the car.

3. The interior guy suggests he can cover the dash with new vinyl. I
would like to know if this is a good idea. He plans on charging me $100. He can actually change the top color from the gold to black.

4. He can also refurbish the Targa Top.

A little detailing and then I will post my pictures. Oh the side mirror. I don't mind missing it actually.

check with Performance Products or Pelican Parts for OEM carpet kits. It may still be a good idea to have them profesionally installed.

It's one less thing to worry about going bad. In 1977 the right mirror was optional, believe it or not!

Good luck with the beast! (I had a 77 once back in...77!)
