Post Weltmeister vs. Factory Short Shift for 911SC

Which way to go? I'm inclined to go with the factory, but the Weltmeister reduces it 39% vs. 25% on the factory one...would like some input.

How are your synchros doing? Mine are a bit stressed and Im considering removing my short shifter. A short shifter alows you to change gears quicker, thus stressing the synchros more. This could make an impact on whether you decided to go for the 25 or 40% reduction in throw.

If you have access to Up-Fixin', there have been a couple of comparative tests in there. If not, I'll look them up tonight. As I recall, Factory short shifter wins each time.

Everybody that I have known with a Weltmeister shifter (myself included) has taken it out, to be replaced by the factory unit. Of course, YMMV

I have the Weltmeister ss in my 78 SC. I am happy with the improvement. I have not driven a car with the factory ss so do not know the difference in feel. Mine seems very solid and I don't know why it would be any harder on the syncros than anything else. Care to expand?

I think most all agree that the Factory Kit is the better way to go.I have the Factory Shift kit
in 83SC and have driven SC's the the Weltmeister. The Factory is the better feeling, the Weltmeister does have a shorter throw, but not that good of a feel. I have been very interested by the new shifters that have come out lately for the 915 box.Any body have any info on these ?
Thanks

My factory short shift kit awaits installation as a winter project. I researched both (this is now several months ago, and I didn't save any references, sorry) and went with the factory kit as more people seemed happy with it.

The point most in the factory kit's favour (IMO)was that it shortened the front-to-back throw, while hardly changing the side-to-side throw. I've only experienced the inadvertent "5th to 2nd" shift once (thanks to my son's first drive in the 911, and despite my warnings, but....)and decided that anything that might make it more likely was not going in my car

Cheers,
Stan V

The "gearing" for short shifters is different than regular shifters. They have a shorter throw, which means you have to use more force to put the car into gear. On cars with worn synchros, this extra force is not a particularly good idea.

The Up Fixin article, done by Russ Dickerson, explains in detail how the short shifter works. Weltmeister, shmeltmeister, stick to factory parts and you can't go wrong.

Factory it is then! I guess I haven't heard ONE bad thing on the FSS, so that's a winter project on it's way...

Thanks guys.

I guess I'm the dissenting opinion. Not to beat this to death, but I am interested.

The weltmeister ss achieves a shorter throw by raising the fulcrum for the shift lever. Longer below and shorter above. Throw is reduced in all directions. How does the factory kit reduce front to back but not side to side?

Also why would a change in the shift geometry increase strain on the syncros? The driver still controls how hard the lever is pressed into gear.

I went to the weltmeister because my factory lever broke are the epoxy joint. The weltmeister came with a solid metal lever. Does the factory ss kit also have this epoxy joint?

I have both, Welmiester in the SC, and factory in the CAB. Both work good, and I have no complaints.
