I think that Steve W. has identified the muffler w/ the best compromise of performance/noise but unfortunately it only works w/ std. SSI style spacing between the banks.

I have had way too many B&B mufflers crack and resonate and they will not stand behind their product either(I purchased a lifetime warranty muffler that was repaired or replaced 6 times in 8 yrs. The last repair I was told would be the last warrenteed) The muffler was immediately sold.

Since I have B&B headers w/ non standard spacing the Monty will not fit. Sooo... I am using a Fabspeed header muffler and am very happy w/ it. The pipes need to be custom welded, but that also means that the fit is perfect. The noise is aggressive but not at all objectionable and certainly not tiring on a trip. The tips are gorgeous and the muffler itself seems sturdy w/ no problems in several years of use. Here is a pic

I always see Porsche owners referring to the gains from their mufflers in the range of 12-22%. Now, my question is: Did Porsche really design such a poor muffler (to meet EPA reqs.) that you get these kind of gains? How come on other cars (like the BMW M3) a sport aftermarket muffler adds at most 6 hp? A 22% gain sounds like a LOT! Of course being a Porsche rookie I could be dead wrong

There is a thread in Pelican where someone actually dynoed the stock set up (+0 HP base point), stock muff with a Dansk pre silencier (+8 HP) and pre muff with a Dansk single in dual out (+12 HP).

According to Bruce Anderson, for 3.2s this set up is suppose to yield as much HP as an SSI. Tweeks has the Dansk on sale right now, Stainless Single in Dual out with 84mm tips for $400 and the pre muff for $180.

Michael,
Thanks for the response. Looking forward to your update after checking out the Fabspeed 3.2 Kit. That is the kit I was thinking of as well. Please post your opinion after your research. Thanks in advance!

Running a B&B exhaust on car since 1999 (ZucZ muffler dual in / 3" out) with no problems. Even had the system off a couple of times. Resonance with single out isn't bad and car sounds great. As for the Fabspeed dual out - too loud for me.

When I got my '86 911, it had a Bursch muffler and catalytic converter bypass. The sound was good, but I did not like the looks of the Bursch as it hung down below the rear valance.

I replaced it with the B&B single outlet muffler and experienced the droning others have mentioned.

I then saw Fabspeed's ad for their stainless steel catalytic bypass and gave them a call. They explained that the bypass had a resonator built in and that they purposely made it look somewhat like a catalytic converter, but you could roll a golf ball through the center. I ordered one, installed it and, voila, no droning.

I found it to be very well made and everything fit perfectly. I have had the system on the car for about two years now and have not had any cracking problems.

I just purchased an '89 911 with the "full" B&B SS headers & muffler system. It is droaning a bit more that I like. Has anyone installed another muffler onto the B&B headers with good success?

Hi:

I'm afraid you are experiencing the main complaint about B&B's and due to their proprietary design, no other muffler will fit the B&B headers without a GREAT deal of fabrication.

If one uses B&B headers, you must use their mufflers. Perhaps GHL has something that will fit.

With a stock setup and a europremuffler, I hear the Dansk muffler sounds pretty nice, and no droning, but I do not think droning is an issue with the stock heat exchangers as much as it would be with SSIs or headers. I have SSIs and have tried about six different mufflers with it - FVD Brombacher, Dansk dual sport, Monty single out, factory stock, TriadWest, and a Triad with a cat on the end. In the end I would have to say the Dansk is best for a sport muffler. The single out may be a bit quieter. The Monty drones a more from 2000 to 3000 so it gets annoying and it seems choked above 5000 rpm. The Dansk drones too, but it's limited between 1900 to 2200 and has a nice controlled roar above 5000. But for peace and acceptance, nothing beats the factory stock bananna.

I had the Fabspeed single in / dual out muffler on my 89 Carrera with their Euro premuffler. Waaaay too loud for me. At idle it was fine, but the resonance at 2800 was deafening and under hard acceleration it was embarrassing loud. I also can say that there was no power gain what-so-ever...at least according to my butt dyno...possibly even a loss.

I kept the premuffler and installed a single outlet Bursch and have been quite happy with the sound...a nice compromise between the silent stock muffler and the obnoxious Fabspeed. Be realistic...you won't gain much HP by only changing the muffler and cat.
