Post Just curious

I bought my 88 Cabriolet to work on and have fun with. Autozone has an alternator for $ 330.00. I had just ordered a voltage regulator, but it was tempting to get the whole alternator for just a little more.

Are Autozone's part such as the alternator permissible uses in our cars.

You should be able to get that alternator from one of the parts houses that specialize in Porsche parts for a lot less. Get a copy of EXCELLENCE and checkout the suppliers, there are lots of them. VERTEX,ZIMS and
EUROPRODUCTS are good on price and service. You should be able to find that alternator for $250 or less. Shop around. I believe that alternator has the voltage regulator built in, but replaceable.

The alternator does have a built in voltage regulator and it is replaceable separately.

If you are looking for parts, check Hennessy Porsche in GA (around 25% discount) and Sunset in Oregon (cost plus 15%), as the Porsche parts carry a 2 year no mileage warranty, which I'm not sure non-Porsche sources provide. Of course not all parts benefit from 2 year warranty coverage, however, on something electrical, I'd consider it.

Ask your self if yourself how many times you want to work on the alternator and how much is the time worth to you? If the alternator has lots of hours, it may need a rebuild soon anyways.

I was down the same road, and in a crunch I just bought a new Valeo unit...Vertex has them for about 290$. I think given the time I spent on the alternator, it is a even break cost-time. And I have a new alternator. The old one will get rebuilt by a qualified shop when I have time to fuss with it. And I still have the VR I bought to replace the VR on the old one. Good for the rebuild shop.

Just put the voltage regulator in today and it was a royal pain.
