Post Lowering/New Shocks

Hi guys,

I went over a couple speed bumps today and heard a clank coming from the rear driver's side. I assume this means I need new shocks (although I'm sure it could be something else). Since I was already planning to lower the car to Euro specs or slightly lower for "spirited" street use (and possibly some DE events), what are my options as far as the shocks/springs, etc are concerned? Also, what would be considered the ideal ride height for this application. It's a Carrera. Thanks!

Thanks, but I have no idea what I have in there right now. It's a Carrera, not an SC, plus I don't think I'll be racing it. I just want something that will improve the handling without hurting the ride quality too much. Also, would it make any sense to only replace the rear shocks?

Carrera and SC suspension is basically the same, with the stock Carrera having slightly stiffer torsion bars. Check what color struts you have on the car now, it will determine what replacements you can install. Opinions are all over the place on torsion bar slection, and I am no pro. I will say that running standard bilstiens is a good way to go. If you only have a street car check the bushings and tie rods, lower it (remove the washer from the top of the strut if it's in there) and align the car and you will be happy. You can lower the car without changing the torsion bars, but it should be done as part of an alignment/corner balance to get it right.

You can just replace the rears, but why not just do all for and be done with it. Shox.com is known for good prices on suspension.

yes, it could be something else - a broken rear sway bar mount is a common malady, be sure to examine them. on 911 ride height & susp. upgrade issues, there are many threads covering the topic, searching these forums will pay off.

Thanks, guys, for all the help so far. I also hear a clicking noise from that side while reversing with the steering wheel turned all the way. When considered along with the noise over speed bumps, is it more likely to be a broken sway bar mount? If so, is this a complicated fix?

it is easy to examine & determine if it is broken. it is easy for a Porsche-qualified body shop to repair. the part is about $60-80. ea. side, I guess it can be welded on in an hour or so. don't assume anything until you have an knowledgable mechanic verify.
