Power and Performance 3.2

[QUOTE=sinfulsteve;5153156]You know Steve, I agree and I disagree. I adored the rush of my 965, really awesome. And on the relatively infrequent times that I could really floor it I scared passengers stiff. But for everyday pleasure, even for really small journeys, the 3.2 has it licked.

Kusee pee,
I had always thought that the 964 looked a little tame, but the 965 looks very cool. Not that I wouldn't consider a 964. Does the 965 have the turbo lags like the older porsches did?

the 965 has a 5 speed for starters with shorter ratios than the 930 4 speed which will help spool up, you can also get rid of a lot of the lag with a modern day ball bearing turbo. I dont think the lag is really any worse than a 3.2, nothing happens until 3000rpm on either, one just comes on harder, much harder and is therefore more exaggerated.

I am frequently disappointed with my 84 Carrera 3.2 and then I hit 4K RPM. From there up I am all smiles... Are there faster cars? Yes. Half the Honda crap on the street would beat it in a straight line. Is there a better experience? Not for the money... Plus the car is iconic. Nothing says sports car like a 911... Of course, nothing says "take that! Beotch!" to my 911 like my 914!

As an aside, has anyone else noticed a flat spot in the power band on these 3.2's between 3,000 rpm and 4,000 rpm? It may have been an intentional design by Porsche, since on the street, you really don't need to rev past 3,000 for power. And on the track, you really don't need to run below 4,000.

i had similar thoughts after first purchasing my 3.2....but i'm learning that the perception of being underpowered has a lot to do with driving style as much as the actual power/weight of the car. yes, there are many cars that will smoke a 3.2 in a heavy throttle straight line situation. stoplight to stoplight torque is not the 911's reason for being...american buyers have always gravitated towards that kind of performance, even today in a new honda....IMO our driving style begins to adapt to that....
then get in a pure sports car and it feels sluggish cause it won't pin you in the seat at any rpm/throttle application.
i'm learning to be more progressive with the throttle and not apply too much too early........when you really get the feel for it, you will be surprised how a 3.2 will freakin' lunge forward thru the higher revs.

Just pedantics with the name - it's really a 964 turbo but some refer to it as the 965 in reference to a still-born porsche project at the time. And it does have a number of 965 part numbers.

I have a friend with a GT-2 and he complains that he needs more power. I get left on the straights by the turbos and GT-x cars and such, but if going fast in a straight line was my priority, I'd have a 60-70's muscle car and go to the strip. The 3.2 is fun to drive (especially with a bit of suspension work) and that is what's important, for me at least.
I don't notice an flat spots during acceleration, but the car is chipped.
A well setup 3.2 can hold it's own when it's twisty. This is a video of me chasing a friend's viper last summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Nwk9kpu148

sjanes,
Very sweet video. Can you give more detail on your mods?
Thanks, Rice

Pretty standard track car stuff:
- 23/30 hollow torsion bars / Bilstein shocks
- monoballs (fronts are camber plates)
- adj sway bars
- bigger brakes
- short gears
- lighter weight (2750lbs without driver)
- SSI / M&K muffler
- cage / seats / harnesses
- other misc stuff
The car is street driven although not a daily driver. It's predictable, provides excellent feedback and is a bucket load of fun.
