Default Which year Carrera to buy

Sold the S and the SC seems about sorted out(thanks to all your help), so I am on the hunt for the Carrera. I am aware of the G50 tranny, pre-buy inspections, Carfax, and bought 2 SC cars with good results. Also, I have almost all the books including Peter's book, and all the engine/car code #s. However, I know little about the 84-88 cars except for the increased horse power, improved suspension and the Moltronics improvement. I have plenty of time to look. Is there any year that is the killer car to own. We got the 1983SC and I think it is the pick of the litter-- is there a heavy bias on the Carrera with year?

I've got an 87 and it's great. But I have to agree... an 89 is cream of the crop. Seems they sorted out a few of the bugs from the earlier G50s.

Did you read in Pete's book that the '88 manual cabrio in ven blu met with dark blue interior is the car of choice? Almost didn't believe it myself.

1989. But there are really very few differences in the 87-89 range, so don't discount them completely.

87 to 89. I'd like an 89 the most.....The hard part is that they imported around 15000 911's to the US in 1987 and only about half that in 1989, so harder to find.My 87 ran MUCH better after getting rid of the factory chip that was I believe upgraded the following year.

I'm not sure exactly which is better because the 87-89 are similiar, but I have to say I've not found any problems with my G50 yet, and I love my 87 Cab...

Although there were minor changes along the way, you can really sort the Carreras as two groups 84-86 and '87-89 (G50). That being said, all of them are great cars, and you'd be better off with a well sorted '84 than with a "tired" '89. I agree with Murph...there's hardly any difference between '87-89 (clutch fork upgrade in late '88 comes to mind), and if you focus on all three years, you'll increase your potential pool of candidates. In my case, I was specifically wanting a G50, and found the "right" one which just happened to be an '88.

Only because you "chipsters" defend them like it's a religion or something!

I looked at 7 cars over 4 months and it a came down to buying the car in the best condition. I drove a 915 that shifted better than the g-50 I drove the previous day! As a guideline the later cars are better, but condition trumps all.

Just trying to convert all those "heathen, non-believers" ! My stone tablets stop at 10, but Loren's has an extra commandment: "Thou shalt not chip"!

Not sure you can get any more true than this - You can find a crummy shifting G-50 and a 915 that has been taken care of.

That said - in my quest a few years ago - I was looking for a lightly optioned car - most of the 1989's and a good portion of the 1988's that I looked at - where optioned to the max - heated seats, power tops, etc. I found more choices in the 1987's. Mine has a manual top - and leather interior - and that's about it - just how I wanted it...

I have an 86 with the 915, no complaints but you cant go wrong with any G50 Carrera
