Default Found a 1977 911S targa

It's an one owner, original title car that is a very original car with nearly every receipt from 1978 (to include $3,800 in recent engine, tires, brakes, clutch and tranny service). S package car. It's been resprayed (nice job) six years ago, but the car has all of its original parts (either on the car or in a box). I can get over the paint, non working a/c and the cookie cutters, but 15k seems a little steep for a 2.7 car.

It needs a few things, like headliner, visors and maybe seat covers, but the one owner thing intrigues me. When I look at my 88 turbo cab, I ask myself, "Why two cars?", but this voice answers, . .It's a Porsche . . . . .

Need advice, please

15k is solidly in 82-83 SC territory and one that shouldn't need alot of work at that... I wouldnt pay that for a 2.7... regardless of how nice it is...

That is exactally what I have been mulling over. I would rather have a 3.0 or a 3.2 car. I guess I could call the guy and offer $ 9,500 and see where (or how much I tick him off) we go. I think that if fair since the car needs $ 1,000 to clean it up

I love my '77 Targa, but I bought it for less than $15k in 2004 with over $10k worth of recent rebuild engine and trans receipts, Kevlar clutch, respray, etc. The car needed nothing but stickier tires when I got it.

My 2.7 puts out around 200hp with its head work, MSD and exhaust , so I consider myself very fortunate. Offering $9500 should not insult him if he is in touch with the market. Of course I hope values increase.

I am rebuilding the engine in our '76 911s and it is as problematic as it is reported to be. We also have a SC. You can get a good sc for $14/15k or so. I would not buy another S.

As I have mentioned several times on Rennlist the 77 model year was the worst year ever for the 911. It won't improve over time. The magnesium cases are always a problem. If the thing is not concours ++ than pass. The SC is totally bullet-proof in comparison. The 77 is far from that.

As a 1977 Targa owner - I concur....
I paid $8,500 for a car I knew needed the engine work - the car is fantastic, and now that I've spent 1 1/2 years to re-build the engine, it will soon share daily driver driver status - again.
I love the Targa for around town and short trips - the 928s for longer trips - and the 930 for weekend (my) rush time

While 1977 may have been the worse year ever - it's obvious anything can be improve over time. The magnesium case is lighter weight and when properly built is great!
Hence....
Time Certs - I would look and see if this was done.
Inherent problems get solved and upgrades get performed - Does the car you are looking at have the tensioner upgrade? Check for oil lines in the timing chain covers.
I love the early cars, BUT - if the above improvements haven't been made - I would stay clear too

Thank you all. I got out in the 930 yesterday and went on a few old country roads to the interstate. I really don't want an older 2.7 car. I think I will continue the search for a sc coupe. I do like the 73 body though.
