Default Where to buy clutch replacement parts for 87??

It looks like I need to replace my clutch. And I'm considering doing it myself with a little help from my friends.

So where's the best place to buy a clutch kit, tools, etc??

I'm assuming my car has all original parts. So it sounds like I need to replace the throw out bearing, upgrade to the newer fork, and put in a spring type plate instead of the OE rubber. Right?

I'm not familiar with clutches, so I can use any advice. Especially on where and what to get. It's not likely this will be a track car, it's a spirited daily driver mostly.

And... what else should I do while the engine is out?

Thanks everyone.

Are you 100% it's the clutch that went?

Nope. It's at my mechanic's now. He's trying to diagnose it.

Good good, I would hate to see you drop some serious coin on a new clutch when the problem was something like a broken slave cylinder seal or something......

Good luck

Shannon, the '87 clutch had an update that is well-known to pro 911 mechanics... I wouldn't have anyone but a 911 expert diagnosing / repairing mine. Don't assume anything. Pelican, Vertex, Perf, all the usual specialists have parts. There are many things one might consider addressing while the engine's out, defined by intent, budget & available skill - best of luck.

Shannon, this is not follow the leader. just 'cause you are doing this, don't think the rest of us are going to follow. It ain't a valve adjustment, or blower delete. I have to say try www.automotion.com they have been very good to me. I got the jacket, and the discount, and the counter guy knows me by name. (I know that's not a good thing) I knew about them long before I got the car. The catalog would show up and it was better than porno.

I have had nothing but top notch results from "CenterForce" clutches in my cars Eagle Talon AWD, 84 911), and I put one in my 84 911 that I purchased from Patrick Motorsports in AZ (they advertise in Pano), along with a lightened fly wheel. Top notch products and service, and in-house knowledge, all around. Usual disclaimers, just a very happy customer. regards,
Steve

911vet,

I just finished with a clutch replacement. I searched high and low for the best prices on the pieces I needed. Here's what I came up with:

HTML Code:
Saks clutch kit spring-center	CK4S	739	VertexAuto.com
updated clutch fork	95011608606	135	VertexAuto.com
pilot bearing 93110211100	6.01	germanimportedparts.com
updated guide tube	95011681306	47.50	germanimportedparts.com
pivot shaft update kit	964116710kit	179	VertexAuto.com
Rear main seal 99911342641	17.55	germanimportedparts.com
*fuel filter 92811025306	18.10	germanimportedparts.com
*oil therm o-ring	99970731440	2.40	germanimportedparts.com
*oil pressure sender	91160623000	7.29	germanimportedparts.com
*sound pad 91155689101	54	VertexAuto.com
* these items were not required for the clutch, but were leaking and/or worn out, so I replaced them while the engine was out.

The only item I ended up buying locally was the pivot shaft update, because I was unsure whether the kit from VertexAuto had needle bearings or bushings, and I knew which one the shop had in stock. Otherwise, I bought everything from these two places after shopping around online. Just after I placed my order, Vertex sent me a "10% off your order" coupon... oh well.

Germanimportedparts.com will ship for free if order is over $75. If you want a rubber-center disc, they have a kit for $850 IIRC. They will also price match (which I had them do with the clutch fork using Vertex's price).

The spring center clutch will transmit more noise from the tranny into the car, especially at low RPM's. At least, that's what I have observed.

Shannon: A must-read thread for you is the "Gear Rattle" thread from not long ago started by Joe Rose. Click on your "Search" button and type "G50 Rattle", the thread will be a few posts down on page one... This, and jpyles good post, will be helpful for you to decide which clutch disc that you want.

Regarding the clutch replacement, have plenty of lacquer thinner or MEK on hand, all metal parts delivered that are coated with shipping grease (i.e. disc contact surface of the pressure plate, same for the flywheel) must be perfectly clean and dry before assembly. It also helps to use latex gloves during disassembly, and clean ones during assembly. Any residual grease not cleaned away can cause chatter...do not use oil-based cleaners!
