Considering an '84 911 Targa
After some consideration I have considered purchasing an older Porsche. My goal is to drive it for 6 months to a year as a daily driver. Recently I have come across this car and I am looking for some feedback on price and what red flags may appear. The car is being sold on consignment by a autobody mechanic. There are no service records, which really bothers me. He is open to a PPI of my choice. http://www.plainfieldmotors.net/deta...a-2226674.html
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brandon

Hard to tell from pictures it seems like every car looks good in them, but it looks to be a nice car....ASKING price seems in line and if the PPI comes out good, then I wouldn't worry about records... It's nice to have them, but the proof is in a good PPI. I not an expert , so I sure some of those in the know will add alot more...

Do you have the books yet? I would not leave home without Peter Zimmermans book "the used 911 story". I think he wrote the book for me and the car I wanted, but you can use it too. I have never seen him comment on individual cars on here or try to perform an internet PPI, but he knows the cars.
I think guys usually comment on how raw the SC's are and the Carrera's are more refined. good luck, the price sounds in the ball park.
EDIT: sorry it's ZIMMERMANN

I will look into that book. I assume it has PPI information, what to look for etc. I am glad everyone is agreement on the price. I to was thinking it was in the ballpark. I guess we will see how it goes.

Those pictures don't look recent. How long has it been up for sale? Probably wiggle room on the price subject to the PPI.

I am just looking for something short term to tide me over till I can move up to a 964 or maybe a 993. I figure I will start with this and see what happens.

If it helps any I paid $3,000 less than the $23,000 asking price for mine. I would think you could knock a grand off the asking price. make the offer then walk away. Get in your car and go home. Go back the next day and see if they have thought about it and walk again. They will come around.....
PS.....skip the 964.

Looks like a good car from here, but that only means that it looks pretty. Be sure to test everything on the car - the heaters, the AC, the fresh air system, all the HVAC levers, all the power equipment, such as windows, seats, mirrors, wipers, wiper pumps, etc.
Once that's all good, you want to have a mechanic check out the brakes, clutch engine and suspension (PPI). If the car turns out to be a good car, then buy it.
One thing to keep in mind is that it could take you more then 6 months to sell it. There are a lot of cars on the market today and these are specialty cars. I have seen quite a few good cars not sell because of the current market conditions. I only say this because if you are thinking of trading to a newer 911, plan it taking some time.
Good luck!

Skip the 964...Lol, I will keep that in mind for the future. I didn't put a lot of thought into the resell for a future one. Your right that may take some time. I assuming that I would get killed on a trade? Have most of you guys sold your cars privately or traded them?
