Anyone live near Santa Barbara, California with a 3.2L 911?
So I finished my valve adjustment and installed another new gasket set and I was pretty happy with the results when I turned the key and listened. After driving it for about 15 minutes though, I heard a little bit of ticket from the cylinder 4 intake area, which was weird. I was hoping I could listen to someone elses 911 3.2 in the area to judge if I am just being super duper **** or not. Can anyone help me out?
THE VERDICT:
BACKSIDE METHOD: In my opinion complete poop. After I did my adjustments the "old factory" way, I could not even fit a .002 feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the cam lobe. I guess this is consistent with people getting their valves too loose when they just use the backside method.
OLD FACTORY METHOD: I like this method now. I found that when all was said and done I had 2 types of clearances on my valves/rocker arms. The first was that there was a lot of drag but still able to get it in there, and when the feeler gauge was disengaged from between the arm/valve you felt and heard a slick click as it came out. To me this felt like it was perfect. Then I had a few that were just almost impossible to get in, tons and tons of drag and I really had to work it in there, and finally when the gauage came out, it was bent up. I would think this is a bit tighter than it needs to be but as long as I got the guage in I was "in the clear". Strange how I still hear what I think is too much ticking from one side....I really need to listen to someone else's engine.
I dont think I'll be taking it apart again, all this draining oil, refilling, draining, refilling, new gasket set, new gasket set, 20000 feeler gauges, has just got me tired. I am satisfied with it and it is staying closed for another 8000 miles at the least!!!!

Remember that the race engines always tick. I wouldn't panic. go easy on it for a while and listen for it to get louder. If it doesn't get worse you are good to go. At this point the less you go in the better off you are going to be.

Just to listen to ensure that the valves are adjusted right. Might have a 911 session on Saturday morning...a buddy is coming over the same time to pull my rear bumper off my 997.

That drive is the best there is. It would almost be worth the drive just to have you listen to mine. I got the gasket set, but am too big a chicken to dive in. Do you have parking for 25 cars?

Why don't we all meet up for lunch in Santa Monica on Monday, Jan 28? I think I can work this out. Perhaps we can get Pete, Doug and Oshin together. We'll have some lunch and listen to valves tick . The only rule is we can't talk politics.
Dan, I'm certainly not trying to leave you out; bring yourself along. I'm staying at the Loew's Santa Monica (911 has to stay in Atlanta ).
