After an exhaustive search for just the right tire (as we call them on this side of the pond), I came up with nothing. What I really wanted was a racing slick. For the very limited road time that Hester gets, racing slicks would have been just fine and they would have looked really cool. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any that matched my specifications. So, because I couldn't get what I wanted, I just got something that would work. I ended up with General Altimax HP's in 195/65 on the front and the spare and 205/65 on the rear (all on those sexy 911R wheels). One of the reasons that I picked them was for their relatively light weight (the 205's reportedly weigh 19 pounds and the 195's 18 pounds). I also liked the look of the tread pattern - they're no Michelin X-es but they are a solid looking touring tire, and, I like the General Brand (you know, "Sooner or later you'll own Generals"). They are only "H" rated not "V" rated but I doubt that I'll ever ask Hester to do more than 130 mph.
Hester, are you the guy to whom the car was given? If so what a lucky guy you are!
If you ever get tired of owning a classic, as you say, I plead that you give the folks here at rennlist the first shot at taking her off your hands. There are some flippers that navigate these waters, but most of the folks here are true hard core enthusiasts.
The car is stunningly beautiful, those clean muscular lines are what have made the 911 a true icon like no other car in the world, IMHO. i hope you enjoy it while you can. Long live Hester and long live the 911.
Hester, are you the guy to whom the car was given?
Yup. I'm the lucky bastard. I'll tell you, when I first saw the car in 1994, I was dissapointed. I had never thought much about Porsches because I never imagined owning one. I grew up very blue-collar and was into "muscle cars." When I heard "Porsche" the image in my head was the flashy, flared, fat-tired 911s of the 80's. When Professor Engfelt drew back the car cover that morning as we were getting ready for our first ride, my first impression was that Hester was old and not like the exotic sports cars that 911s were in the 80's. Of course, I never let on about that to my Professor because I wouldn't have dreamed of insulting him. Of course, back then, my annual rides in Hester weren't about the car, they were about hanging out with the man that, to me, seemed much too down to earth to be a law professor.
When his family passed the car to me and I learned what a special car she is, all I could think about was how I'd rather be riding shotgun with Frank Engfelt at the wheel again so I could share my new found appreciation for the 911S with him.
