87 911 Targa Kassis Red (Wine Red) on Burgundy, 90,000 miles.
Top-end rebuild and clutch/flywheel at 82k mi in Jan 04 by highly regarded Independent Porsche shop. I spoke with shop that rebuilt the motor, he highly recommends the car, owners are very meticulous about the maintenance.
New tires, brakes and rear konis. Exterior never repainted, few minor scuffs on front bumper, overall 8/10. Interior 7/10, only a small hole in drivers seat.
No records other than stamps in book prior to this owner who purchased car in 2002. Owner has multiple 911's.
Drives excellent, no leaks, targa a bit noisy.
What do you think a fair price range would be? Car is located in Mid-West.
Thank you,
Mark

if you like that pink/red color and red leather and targas then it's worth what you want to pay isn't it.
do you like all that or are you just happy about the motor? Because if this is the car for you then offer what you want to spend.
get a ppi from someone else other than the guys that rebuilt it.
I'd say 15-18 that's just my opinion without papers and a targa and a color that may not be the easiest sell. I don't mean anything about the color, I like it, just don't know if I could drive all the time.
good luck

I would say 18-19 myself but as others have pointed out there are variables. The colour for one. To some it's a big deal, to others it's not. The other one is location. Price differs depending on where you are, especially this time of year. Targas do seem to command less money than cabs or coupe for some reason.
But it is a G50 with a fresh top end, clutch, tires, brakes, and suspension.
How much is he asking?

Hasn't established a price, he spoke with the mechanic, 19-21k. I tend to agree on the color, just can't fall in love with it. It sounds like the upper end of his price is a bit much and I tend to agree, I doubt he'll have trouble selling the car. G50's are nice, I was impressed. The other car I'm looking at is a 964, so many decisions.

If you haven't picked it up yet, The Used 911 Story by Peter Zimmerman is a good book, it will guide you through the different years, their weaknesses and strengths. And as always, get a PPI.

Being an owner of a 1987 Carrera I can tell you that a good top end is not cheap. I just had mine done for 12K and I used my original P&C's. I am not sure about the comment that most 87's need transmission work. Certainly the stock clutch had more than its share of problems. I would say the car is worth at least 22-25K! Again, that is assuming the top end work included a good valve job, rings and various other parts found to be bad during disassembly.

you may find that colors g red, silver, black are best liked, coupes may be more in demand in USA. prices may be soft with the housing melt down and loan crunch, time is on your side in a soft and declining market. get the records from the shop--- pay $3 a sheet. have a pre- buy the few hundred $ is worth it

According to Sports Car Market magazine it should run about $19,000.00 in good condition. In the August 2007 edition of the Excellence magazine Porsche price guide, the 1987 Targa goes from $16,474 in "so-so" condition to $25,075 in "excellent condition. From your brief description, I'd say the car you are considering is closer to "so-so" than "excellent."

I agree with most that the PPI, from a shop that didn't do the rebuild, is the most important step .... I'm not sure that all 87 Carreras need transmission work.... My has never had any done and has 94,000 miles on it. I think it probably it has to do with the previous drivers and how the car was treated... When I bought my Carrera I was looking for Black or Silver, ended up with red...Now red is one of my favorite colors... Good Luck.

It's the cross shaft for g50's
Earlier than G5001-1K-03381 and G5001-2K-01159 I assume that includes 87, 88 and part of 89.
I don't even know what to say about that 12k top end up there, thats crazy money

Sounds like a $20k car, but that doesn't mean you can't get it for less.

don't scare this guy with money figures about repairs.
you can look at your car and tell if it has the shaft update, and It really shouldn't cost 2k.
this 12k top/valve job bothers me, what was done for 12k?
valve guides, rings, clutch and H studs should be 5, 5.5k
If I would have read comments like this five or six years ago I would have never bought a carrera
have to edit this, it's near impossible without dropping the half shaft and starter to see the other end of the shaft.
