Default Heater control boxes AKA "Flapper boxes"

In my '88 cab I always have heat. I've tried stronger springs, I have tried adjusting the thermostat on the auto heat unit between the seats, and I've unplugged the main blower. Now that the weather is 60 instead of 100+ I figured it wouldn't bother me, but I was wrong.....I want to rip out my flapper boxes and replace them or see if something in them can be fixed. The big questions are:

What is between the flapper box and the frame? Is it silicone, or felt, or a gasket, or something else? Can I get it off without distroying it? are they the same left and right or different as the Performance Products website shows? I am ready to cut off the system all togeather....Help me keep my cool...

Be sure that your cables are fully adjusted, because even if they are partially closed, air will still flow past them and you'll get heat in the cabin. Make sure they are fully closed before you replace those boxes.

Doug-the shutter doors can bind. Mine did, and the servo was able to manipulate the cable by bending the tab, so it seemed like the auto-heat was functioning, since I could hear the servo motor. They may just need some penetrating oil sprayed on?

Doug, What Ed said. On my 84 Targa I had some unwanted heat coming and all I did was use a little WD40, work it in a little bit and bingo, problem solved.
