Default Correct Tire Size

I recently purchased a 1984 911 Carrera. The previous owner was running 225/50/16's on the front wheels. It is my understanding that the correct size should be 205/55/16 for the fronts. Are there any negatives to continue running the 225's on the front?

Are you running wider in the back, or 225's all around?

I'm running the 205's / 225's on my 84 currently.

Car has 225's at all four corners.
Wheels are 6" in front and 7" rear.

I just went through this...the stock combination is 205 front and 225 rear (whether 6/7 or 7/8). A few folks run 225s up front and 245s in the back for street & track duty. As long as your car isn't below Euro ride height, you should be fine w/ the 245s in the back as far as rubbing goes.

For the front, its a different story. To run 225s up front, some fender massaging and maybe some stiffer t-bars is necessary, especially if your car will see track duty. Since you have 225s on there now and no rubbing issues, someone probably has either trimmed or rolled (more likely) the fenders - again, probably.

I run 7's and 9's right now w/ 205s and 245s respectively. I just like the beefier look in the back - but don't want to have to deal w/ any fender rubbing issues in the front.

For street use, a good bet is 205/225 combination. For street track combo, you may want to look into the 225/245 combo.

So a 245/45 will fit on a 9 inch Fuch in the back? That must be tight. I was concerned about putting a 245 on an 8 inch in the back.

gerry: The engineering of the suspension in your car was all done based on the car being fitted with wider rear tires. 225s on all four corners is inherently a bad setup, perhaps even leaning toward dangerous during high speed emergency maneuvers and the like. All the specs from alignment settings to tire pressures have been calibrated to not only control oversteer, but to make it a useful driver tool. Put 205s on the front, and you will also enjoy slightly lighter steering, as well as a better balanced car.

See my avatar - that's 245 on there now - Euro ride height. If you go lower, gotta dial in some camber.
