For those of us who are seriously afflicted with the Porsche "disease," we find ourselves announcing to our friends, loved ones, complete strangers, etc. the presence of our esteemed marque as we go about our daily travels.
I'm sure there are many among us who have announced to no one in particular, "993" when we happen upon one.
If the disease has progressed far enough, it even invades your sentences without your notice. Ever said "Hey, did you watch oooh nice 912 the Sopranos last night?" I have.
Some of us are quite good at spotting the subject of our disease. We need just the barest glimpse of a roofline, fender or bumper to immediately spot a Porsche, even when it is surrounded by a sea of less desirable cars.
My wife, the one who calls it "the Porsche Cult of America," she who says my Carrera smells like an old VW, has completely and forever humbled me.
We walk out of the restaurant onto a quiet street in Carmel by the Sea. She points vaguely down the street and says "Porsche."
I look. "Hmm, surely she can't mean that red Honda Del Sol over there?" Just when I'm about to open my mouth to insert foot- I hear it. The low growl of a flat six. Stepping out into the street, I spot it. A white 3.2 Carrera being parked by the curb. A BLOCK AWAY. I can barely see it, let alone hear it.
But she did.
Is that cool or what?

And I thought I was the only one!
My G/F has become somewhat annoyed with this practice and succumbed to shouting "Porsche" on occasion while were out and about, but it's usually followed by "PSYCH!"

Well, quiet restruant with just you and your wife and a romantic moment. That explains it...there are some things that are just more importnant than Porsches...event hough some would deny it.

Yeah I've got it too and I'm glad. I can spot a 911 or any model for that matter from pretty far off. I get around the greater L.A. area in my work and get to see quite a few sometimes. The Hollywood Hills are always good for sightings and the Beach citys.
Cheers

I too am one of the afflicted. I do in unconsciously. My daughter, who's 13, was quite amused at first. She rolled her eyes a lot(like she does at everything I say) and called me a Porsche freak, but now when we're riding around, she can pick an SC from a carrera and a 993 from the 996. She appropriately harumphs at the water-pumpers and even once said "Look at the sushi tray on that turbo". I was so proud.

I've got it too and like some others, the kids are showing signs of it too, particularly my almost 7-year old son. My 12 year old daughter rolls the eyes, but plays along since, she is after all, Daddy's girl.
My wife just doesn't get it though. On the way back from Bend, OR, this past Monday, (in the Volvo 855, since we've got the 2 kids, skis, etc)we're heading south on US97, when I spot a pretty pristine early 911 coming toward me. I wave as it goes past. My wife starts to laugh, asking me why I waved, to which I answer, "Its a Porsche and Porsche owners wave to one another." She about doubles over in laughter, saying that I'm not even in my Porsche and how would the other Porsche know I'm a Porsche owner? My answer - he just would.
Am I totally nutty or do others wave at Porsches even when you're not driving yours?

I always wave or flash when I'm driving the pcar, and sometimes when I'm in the Pathfinder. But the pathfinder has a PCA license plate and a Riesentoter PCA sticker on the back, so the other Porsche drivers don't get it unless I pass them. I never flash or wave when I'm driving my wife's POS Chrysler minivan - I want to be invisible then. BTW, my 13 year old Porsche has never dripped a drop of oil on my garage floor, but under her minivan, now 2 years old, there is a growing pile of oil soaked kitty litter. It's been in the shop 8 times in the last 12 months. I loathe it.

My fiance used to laugh pretty hard whenever I did the "porsche wave", flashed the lights, or beeped the horn...
until the beautiful Saturday afternoon last fall when i was deep in concentration ahead of me and turned my head to catch her in the act of waving to the couple in the Cab next to us.
Funny, she hasn't made fun of me since.

Wow this thread brings back so many memories.. Havent had the 911 for 2 years now and can feel it.. GRRRRRRRRRR
I had a gf at the time and now she is on her own and knows about as much as I do for picking out years ect.. What a turnon!!
The wave, blink of the lights is all so real but havent for awhile.. Don't see many older 911's down here in vegas cuz of the heat but they always get a flash..
Anyone ever notice how the 996 drivers are very very slim on the flashbacks? maybe 1/10 flash back.. Oh well guess they havent been around long enough to understand..
(RANT MODE ON)
Damnit just thinking of it that i mentioned the 996 above that dont you totally hate it(the owners of the cars must feel bad too) when ya see 10 miles ahead the lines coming at ya.. "OH HERE COMES A 996" ...... "OH WAIT THAT'S A BOXSTER"
when are they gonna give their own looks to each of them.. i hate that and would imagine if i drove a 996 that if people thought it was a boxster for any second i would feel badly. Good things with the pre 996 models as you can always tell and NEVER mistake them for a lesser car..
