..........for a 1986 911 with 25K miles?

Would $23,000 sound fair

Not to me. It sounds high for a low mileage '86, but might sound good (for the buyer) for your '88 with that many miles. But then, I think low mileage gets more respect on the market than it deserves. I think a closer examination of the car and its history would be needed to determine its fair market value. Selling prices depend on more than fair market value, however. They depend on how much the seller wants to sell it, and how much the prospective buyer wants to buy it. Given that, I could believe such a car selling for as high as $25k as the nicest stock '86 in the country, or as low as $17k if the condition of the car didn't match its low mileage. Well, that's my uninvolved position, but when I find a car I really want, I'm not always quite so rational. As one of my advisors (who knew just what to say at the time) once said, never let a few thousand keep you from buying a car you really want.

Jim makes some good points. Sounds high to me too. Now if it is the nicest stock '86....it may be worth that to someone. Not to me, but to someone. I don't think there is anything magical about the '86's. They are nice, and I'm close to buying one, but from what everyone has told me the '87 & '88's are the better car. I guess you already know that though!

What would I pay (WHEN RATIONAL)? $20,000. If it's really really really nice, after the PPI of course.

Good luck!

Feel free to voice your disagreement.

It sounds like there are tons of nice cars on the west coast going for cheap these days. If you pay a premium for a low mileage car, understand it's still a 17 yr old car. That said, for a car you plan to keep for a while, and that's in perfect condition, $23k might not be too high.

Just try to find another 86' with 25K miles. Good luck, especially if you are looking for a certain color combo. If you are looking for a daily driver, don't buy it. You will just drive the value off. If say in 5 years you have 49K on it, and it's still in excellent condition, I'd bet you could sell it for what you paid. 1 1/2 years ago that car would have gone for 30K, I assume it's a coupe. The economy is creating all these great deals, the cars are not depreciating that fast. There are those out there who want low mile cars only, and the pickings are getting slimmer every year.

I'm with 86NOH2O and 88clbsport. Assuming it's in the kind of shape it should be in with just 25K miles, I think it's EASILY worth $23K. There are so few left with that mileage -- this would not be an easy opportunity to repeat. I simply cannot believe that the market has soured so much that a 25K '86 is worth only $20K. There are deals out there due to highly motivated sellers, but it's not the norm.

88 -- why did you sell your C4S? You just got it!

I'd be curious as to why the car only has 25K in 17yrs.

The story might reveal something.

I checked out the car last night, It still smells new, Its Flawless in concours condition. The only drawback is that it has ungly 17" turbo twist wheels that kill the look of the car. If I buy it, i'm either gonna sell it and make a few bucks or sell my '88 and keep the '86. If somebody is interested let me know.
