That's the US Federal government protecting you from speeding. One of the first "fixes" many people do for those years is to replace the speedo.
Top speed should be around 140 or so.

I'm sure they do. My 79SC has a 150 speedo. I think he meant max speed at redline. Years ago, I saw about 145-147 on mine redlined in 5th gear. I've slowed down quite a bit as I got older. The car will probably still do it.

There were a few years that Porsche was told to put 85mph speedos in the 911SC. Mine came with a 150 mph speedo but I put a 170 into it as I used to peg the 150 one too much and wanted a better idea of what the car was doing.
Oh yea, I had a turbocharger on that engine,--but it was gear limited with the stock 5-speed to 162mph indicated.
Th normal 911SC should be able to do 145 mph.

Mine has the 85mph guage also. Its not like it really matters how fast your going past that anyway but it would be nice to know. Iv had mine to nearly 5 grand in 5th gear. I have a brochure for a 911sc and it has a graph to show speed vs. rpm in every gear. Thats what i use if i wanna know how fast i went

I miss your old avatar, Ice. It just somehow don't seem like you no more
. Perhaps your emotions over your tragic loss of Stick have led you to feel the need to erase all vestiges of your old friend from your memory. If that's the case, I understand. I'll bet I'm not the only one to give a puck.

Err that's about 135-140mph. About when our poor little 4 cylinder Porsches are slipping into top gear onto 180+mph. To be fair the SC was from the early to mid 80's. My 944t is an '89. lol
Sorry I just fell across this thread and I actually do like the old SC too.
Oh and don't worry, I know. Get a real Porsche. heheheheh

These threads always surprise me. I have an 82 SC with a rebuilt race engine, headers, straight pipes running Hoosiers at 2700lbs with me in it and the most I've ever seen on the track is 130mph - flat out at Watkins Glen on the back straight (with a draft). By the way, there aren't any 3.2's flying by me either.
