Default Redline Yikes!

My '84 Carrera is stock. Redlines at 6250. The other day I accidently took it to 7grand! After the shock, I listened for a moment, drove and all was fine. Funny though, I thought the Rev limiter would have kicked in but the engine didn't hesitate until 7000 rpm. Scary stuff.

Nice post number...When my car is all hopped up on 95 octane I can take the rev's up like that and not have the limiter kick in. Don't know why, don't know how, but it sure is fun.

I don't think hitting a bit past the redline for a second or two would hurt a thing if the oil is warmed up...may actually blow some carbon out...the redline gets hairy if you missshift (goes way up), that is where you can have "oh craps"...you are fine.....

I have done it a time or two on the track. Knock on wood but I have had no ill effects even with 98k plus on mileage. Usually it is the money shift that causes massive overrev and catastrophe.

Are you sure it's stock? You wouldn't be the first to open their DME and find an Autothority (or other) chip in there. My stock chip definitely kept her down, and I remember the first time...whoa, what the heck was that ? I've been running a SW chip (stock +400), and can't remember the last time I hit the limit, but I get close almost every time I drive her (AFTER she's warmed up).

That's what puzzled me too, when I first went for topspeed the first time and the needle just kept going and going. Turns out with a stock chip the limiter is set to 6520. Especially combined with a somewhat inaccurate revcounter it can be perfectly normal for the needle to go well past redline.

The two carrera tachs I've looked at were off by a lot at the top end, accurate at the low, way off at the top. Like 600 or so off. I hit the limiter @ 6800 quite a few times only to see the needle pegged when it was a NA car.
Watching a digital tach and your own in the car at the same time is eye opening

As previously stated, an infrequent venture beyond the red under acceleration usually isn't a big problem. These old Porsche motors are pretty robust. Overtime if you're venturing up there regularly you'll start to stretch the motor and it'll fail, but if you're doing regular maintenance keeping everything torqued to specs and the valves adjusted properly it'll last quite a while. Its the ORs under engine braking that are really bad on it.

Does the Autothority or Steve Wong chip increase or eliminate the rev limiter?

The higher rev limiter is a big selling point on all the chips. Some guys will even set a "custom" limit.

KC911-I haven't looked in the DME, but maybe I should because it pulled hard all the way up to 7grand. Or like J. Brinkley suggested the Tach could just be way off.

I think the Autothority's rev limit is way "up there". Steve W. will set the limit for whatever you desire. Stock +400 is his "standard" as I recall (I think that's what the Club Sports limit was set at from the factory). In hindsight, I'd be quite happy with my SW chip at the factory rev limit...the major "benefit" of Steve's maps are in the part throttle mappings anyways imo.

I agree with a lazy gauge. I've heard that the VDOs tend to "lead" the actual engine speed by up to 700 RPM during acceleration. This means you can shift safely in the red zone but it also makes it difficult to know when to shift. My 3.0 hits peak HP at 5800 RPM. If I don't know how far off my tach is, then I don't know when I'm at peak HP. My butt dyno tells me to run up to 6500+ before shifting.

The Clubsport revs to 6840, but with lighter intake valves.
