Default 89 911 Cab - vent window - how do I replace the rubber cap seal?

I have an 89 Cab and want to replace the Vent Window Cap / Corner Seal
(911-542-065-41-M260) - its the little rubber piece that the window comes up against when you bring it all the way up. There are 2 screws on top and apparently it takes 2 rivets as well. My question is how do I remove the fuzzy channel (guides window) that is against the vent window? Do I pull it out or do I have to dis-assemble some portion of the door.

I am also trying to replace the rear seat belts and can't get the bots to budge. Any suggestions? I tried some penetrating oil but that has not worked.

TIA...

start with lost of pictures and only bust up one side at a time. If you screw it up too badly, I'll be at Performance Products by say 10:30 in the morning, you can yell at me there.

EDIT: hold on the bently book has a page on it....

Thanks for the heads up. I must have missed it in the Bentley book. I will check again.

page 640 is as close as you are gonna get. it almost looks like you have to remove the vent window from the door. I'm gonna go out and look at mine to be sure what part we are talking about. or again....I could look up the part at www.automotion.com

is this the part we are trying to remove? I would think the two allen screws would help get it out.

That's the part. I took out the fuzzy strip and there are 2 brass rivets (?) on the vertical shaft that goes down the side. I can't figure out how to take the rivets out shy of drilling them out which is really scarey if the vent window is there. I can't beleive it is really going to be that much work. I don't want to take out the windows and I have no idea how to put in rivets based on what I am seeing. Oh well. It may be time to go to a shop.

I don't remember the two brass rivets on my car??? it looks like you just remove the two allen bolts and thats it. 'coulda be one a dem dam C. B. radio montin' pozitions'- said in a voice like Darisc said it... could the rivets be a non-factory add-on? ....Like when the vin# is issued by the CHP. Like the 935 around the corner that has the vin# on the door jam, not the front window. I know I'm out there, but I don't have it on mine.

post a picture and no, it's not time for a shop. rivets are no problem and available at Home Depot for cheep. I put fresh rivets in my Hobie Cat every year. the gun is like 20 bucks.

I had a look at my friends 76 targa and it has rivets in the lower side as well.

Doug, they aren't pop rivets. They are the sort that has to be peened over with a hammer and punch.

It looks like you will have to remove the 1/4 light window, and disassemble it, to do the job safely.

good luck.

Here's a picture of the current situation and the rivets I just got. How do you "install" the revits and how do you remove the vent window?

Why are you doing this? you said originally that you wanted to replace the cap / corner seal. why does that involve the rivits. It should only be the two allen bolts? I am very lost....

EDIT: you are correct, it is more than the 2.5mm allen screws and the corner isn't connected to the fuzzy channel. I tried it it it moves a smidge, but doesn't come out. I guess the next step is the rivets. I'm not gonna try that one.

The rubber piece is on a an L bracket - it is attached on top with 2 screws and behind the fuzzy strip by the 2 rivets. So there is no way to replace the rubber piece without removing the revits and then replacing them during re-installation. I am at a loss as to how best to remove them and then to put the rivets back in. So I figured I would check on line before I start the project. The only alternative is to have a shop do it.

So the picture I stole from PP is the hand holding the part behind the fuzzy channel! Why's it gotta be so compicated. so its screws, fuzzy channel, rivets, then the corner? man that sucks....

Yup. And not a common rivet type to add insult to injury!
