my 1981sc is stone stock and i still have the york compressor, the only thing not factory is the freon, i am using enviro cool r12 substitute, today is 98 deg out side, my car is dark in color, sitting in sun, i drove around for a few minutes and i was blowing 38 deg out of the vents, the hottest it got in traffic was 45 deg !!!!!!!!!!!!! mabey i am just lucky, i dont know, but im staying nice and cold.

The A/C on my 78SC works just fine and A/C performance is comparable to other cars I have. The key is airflow across the condenser (along with an otherwise working system). I did my system about 5 years ago...search under my name (hladun) on Pelican Parts. There have been more recent posts there of others doing the same thing. It works.

I contacted Griffiths in the states: http://www.griffiths.com/ and I was blown away at how comprehensive the email reply I got back was. I just wish they were over here!

FWIW - on my '89 3.2 coupe I did the following upgrades about 1 year ago:

- new Sanden compressor (stock one had leaking seals)
- converted to 134a freon
- replaced evaporator & blower fan
- added Pro-cooler
- added Kuehl center vent & variable fan control (to reduce that "blow dryer on high" noise level)

The end result is a noticeable improvement in cooling the interior of the car, however it is still not sufficient to survive a 1+ hour trip in upper 90's temperatures as found in the summer in the southeast US. The next potential upgrades for me would be to replace the front and rear condensers with the new serpentine models like the ones that Griffiths sells.

Regards,
David

My AC works great in Orlando FL, IF, the temp is below 75 deg F and the humidity is less than 30%.

I removed my AC last winter as my car is becoming more track than street. If anyone is interested, I have a Sanden compressor (507 - 4 yrs old) with all brackets, front stock condensor and blower, and Keuhl center vent that i would like to sell.

Yes, it sucks. Mine is good enough to keep me on the road in Florida during the summer.
