Smile Is the A/C really that bad?

Searching for a nice 964, I would also consider a late 80s 911 but I have always read that the A/C in those 80s cars sucks.
Is it really that bad ?(summers are hot and humid here)

I have a '89 3.2L, the a/c doesn't work well at all. If anyone knows an aftermarket system to install THAT WORKS please post the link.

PS: I can cook lunch on my seats, black/black.

Yes, the a/c sucks in the older cars without modifications. If you want really cold a/c, and don't want to modify the a/c system, get something else.

I removed mine completely. That will give you an idea of how well it works.

Scott said it best. Take the money you were going to have to spend on AC stuff, add time, sweat, and more money, and recharges. And buy your second or third economy car or truck. It really will aggravate you.

One magazine described the a/c as comparable to "a hamster blowing on an ice cube." That was optimistic. I have spent way too much trying to squeeze event a moderate amount of cooling out of the car without much luck.

I am a customer of theirs, and their stuff is the best, bar none. However, while the best is expensive upfront, it pays off in the end. I put their system on a 76 930 and the air was frigid.

My experience with 80's Porsche AC is that it works marginally well up to about 85 degrees F outside, and then it quickly goes downhill. One problem is that Porsche used 30 feet of semi-permeable hoses, so the refrigerant is always slowly leaking out. It needs to be topped up a lot - if you have converted to R134a, you can do it in your driveway in ten minutes for ten bucks; if you are still using R12, well, it's a PITA.

My current Carrera has a stock system, but converted to R134a. I just don't even bother to drive it much in the summer anymore - I'll just have to make do with my M5 - the AC is so good some days we turn the seat heaters on

Yes it sucks. I guess it never really got hot in Germany until the 1990s.

The A/C in my '84 Carrera is a cruel sound effect which is comparable to pointing a blow dryer directly at your face. It is also in tip top condition.

Keep in mind that the more "efficient" the A/C becomes, is made, in an air cooled 911 the HOTTER will be the airflow used to cool (COOL??) the engine itself.

COOL driver = HOT engine.

There must be a rough translation of "air conditioning" that comes out as "noisy fan" in German.

Mine is going in for the full treatment with local guy who is known for getting 911 aircon to work really well. In the words of a friend who had the system installed, "it freezes your ***** off". $2300AUD is the price but may be extra as I dont want the condensor in the lid.
