Default okay so I lost another fan belt...

I think I am going to start buying these in bulk ... this time I was checking the oil I had just changed. I could not quite see the oil level as it had just ben changed so I bent down so the dipstick was in the shade .... I guess my oil checking rag was dangling down and the next thing I new it was flying around my alternator pulley ... oh well, just lucky my fingers ween't in there.

turned the belt again ... time to stock up ..

Glad to here that yu're fingers were spared and at least the rag did not get sucked through the fan.

I usually use a small paper towel to check the oil just in case it gets sucked into the fan.

Ice
I will go half on a gross of belts also. My issue is the damn pulley washers, I go through those like quarters in a slot machine.

I've never lost a belt in 17 years. You must have a problem with belt tension. Careful as this will damage your alternator's bearings and potentially destroy your fan (happened to one of my family's 993's).

Well Juan I have to tell you it is mostly operator error ...
1. missed shift and turned the belt inside out ( admitedly on the loose side but intentional to save my alt bearings ..
2. oil cap fogot to put back and fell inside fan belt area and chewed belt
3. checking oil and had ragged pulled in ( like paper towel idea )
4. had belt to tight once and it chewed the edges of the belt uo pretty good ..

time to order some new ones .....

PS john I have my line up of wounded soldier washes too , not quite getting them on right and squishing the crapola out of them .....

oh well its all great fun ...... and when i do need to change it I can do it in about 5 minutes now , , at night , in rainstorm with no roof in my targa, with a broken flashlight, :-)

MAN!! Inspect that pulley, nut, and everything else....having a gas cap go thru belt contact points could wreak damage

Best of luck

I guess I'm lucky. Never lost a belt in 39 years of driving Porsches.

The "nut" is between the seat and the steering wheel! LOL, Iceman, you know I'm just kidding

can'r believe it .. snapped another belt today .. weird ...... i did notice something interesting this time. before i replaced the belt I just spun the fan and noticed the pulley wobbling a bit . I thiny I may have bent the outer half so i am ordering another one . So of course when I put the new belt on .. there were spots where it was tight and others where it was looser..... I think the rag I caught in it may have damaged it ...

Hi Iceman,

You sure know how to become an expert at something. That is weird about the pulley. That can't be good. Good to see you back in action!

i know I know ... I took the fuel pressure regulator off the car the other day as I was curious about it .. now it won't start and idle worth a damn cold or hot.. I think I have some kind of munchausen by proxy -- Porsche strain - affliction I would say

I always manage to get in to something ... mind you when the car is running it is running fantastic these days ...
