Default Sales value of an '87 Carrera Coupe

I am attempting to sell my '87 911 coupe with about 63K miles and in immaculate condition with no issues and thinking it should be worth around $26,500. Extras include sun roof, central locking, upgrade wheels, good tires, GP White with linen color leather interior. Exterior paint paint appears as essentially new. Any thoughts?? Thanks. grn356

what part of the country are you in? If you are in south west, florida, or some other Porsche hot spots you may find a buyer quickly at that price. Some areas great cars are sitting at $15,000...good luck. sounds like a color combination I wanted and couldn't talk my wife into.

Where? Pics? Similar conditioned red 3.2 Carrera in my area for $26000 http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...eadExists=true

This red 3.2 Carrera for $16000 is more in line with Kelly Blue Book values. Tempting but 800 miles away from me. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e=&cardist=768

Red 3.2L on Cars.com:
Well I have a problem with the stupid KBB values... adding a rear Carrera tail & front Chin Spoiler adds what, $125 in "value" ? I mean, I just spent what, $800-$900 on pickup up a new Chin & a used but good Carrera tail over the past year? Ugh.

Red 3.2L in RI on Autotrader:
Umm, "ABS"?

If anyone needs an unbiased layman's opinion on the car, happy to offer a look-see, as I'm in RI anyway.

As for the original poster's position, I personally think $26,500 is a high-end value for the car, unless significant maintenance has been performed (top end, full suspension / brakes, clutch, etc.), or something else special. Not saying you won't find a buyer who is willing to pay that, but I do think you'll be sitting on it quite awhile. Anyone realizing they're going to have to put $3k-$5k in normal maintenance is going to want that reduced from the price at that level.

Good luck!

I just bought an '89 coupe with 53k miles in the same mint condition on the west coast for 27,900. The market update in the August issue of Excellence says just under 26,000 for an excellent '87 coupe, so I think you are in the ballpark.

Wow, maybe I ought to sell my '84 Cab then.

That'd put almost $20k in my pocket after paying off the note, which'd be great toward a 993 or the old-school cool 3.6L 70's looking project, or a 904 kit car, or...

Yes PLEASE! I need specifics. Oil leaks? How many owners? What's factory, nonfactory (the seats look nonfactory)? Records/documentation? More pics? My email is "elozano at comcast dot net" or PM me. Thanks!

KBB values are way off, IMO. California cars command a much higher price than in other parts of the country. $26,500 seems a bit high, but you said "immaculate," so you could probably pull it off. I mean how many immaculate 87 coupes are there really? So if someone is looking for one, they are willing to pay for it.

I'm in the market, and won't pay $26.5K for a 20-year old car that I plan to drive (not put in a tube for display).

For 26G Id get a 2001 911 with and call it a day. Unless your a collector i wouldnt pay much over 15k for a bone stock 911. Im a bit sick in the head and have to play with everything i get my hands on. Thats why I bought a track car with goodies all over the place.

These price discussions of the older cars always bother me because at that age the amount of repairs/upgrades needed can be significant % of the asking price.

This is assume sthat anybody who buys one of these will invest in making it th ebest it can be.

I'm sure one can buy an '87 for $15K and over the ensuing 12 months put in $10K or buy one as described above and spend little or nothing.

KBB is used by dealers to justify low trade in offers and doesn't realy apply to 20 year old cars, most of which have been scrapped.

IMHO, the only supportable statement is that a running '87 911 is worth between $12K and $30K depending on many details you don't know without studying the specific car.

Exactly. For near $30K, low mileage 996es are available. I'd have to really be INTO the 911 Carrera to fork over that much dough. At age 40 (going on 41), the Porsche 911 that's always caught my eye from the get-go was the 993 Carerra. Before the 993, I never gave Porsche much attention. The 996 is also a great car. But after being a perpetual 911 shopper, I've learned about these older Carreras. They have some charm and character that's been lost in the newer models. Still I'd buy one for no more than $19K to $20K (immaculate condition).

With all due respect if someone wants a perfect/flawless example of an untouched 911 I would assume a 25k price is reasonable. Cars in general are the worst things to use as an investment. Thats why most financial institutions do not consider cars as collateral. There are exemptions to this. Like that rotted old Bugatti from I think 1936 that got 825k at a recent auction.

I think your car is going to pertain to a specific market and it may take a bit to get the price your looking for. I and a few others on this board are not in your market group. Im a tinkerer and want things at an extreme....on the other hand If I had the money I throw 100k at a 911 race car in a heartbeat but would not even look at an original super low miles Porsche, Ferrari etc. for the same price.

In short your looking for some one in the concours dept.

Good luck with the sale. You may also want to post a for sale thread @ pelican.
