930 vs 911 (1st post)
I have been researching and looking at porsches the last month or so. The two models I like are the 76-80 930 and 88-89 911 Carrera. The reasons I like these two are:
76-80 930 Pros- I love turbo cars, I live at a high alititude, wide body looks cool to me, can be registered as a collector, probably won't depreciate.
88-89 Carrera Pros-Better Tranny, better ignition?, newer (less maintenance), better a/c.
I haven't driven a 930 yet or found yet close to me for sale. I have found some carrera's for sale though in good shape. So my question is does a modded carrera (say cammed, chiped, exhaust, tb, etc.) perform as well as a stock 930? If I don't have enough patience to wait for the right 930 I know I can find a nice 911 in several weeks at any given time.
Thanks! Matt

welcome matt
i havent driven a turbo (yet) but the carrera is (read can be) a great car with more modern drivetrain, electronics etc etc
my tip is to take your time, be patient and drive as many different cars as you can

Carrera is going to make a much better daily driver, Turbo will scare the hell out of you and make you come begging for more. What's the car for and what's the budget?
remember, I warned you about the Turbo, don't go blaming Porsche that you've become a boost junkie.

ya, a meth habit would be less money than turbo....
where do you live?
how often will you drive?
can you handle 145 mph?
get the book "used 911 story" by Peter Zimmerman
I got 4 or 5 books and drove about 25 cars
it is a sickness, you have been warned

Thanks for the replys guys. So far I have the "Porsche 911 Buyers Guide" Book...Unfortunately I am already addicted to boost My last 3 cars were turbo and I even put a turbo on my Jeep Rubicon. I am living in Denver, CO so we have some fun canyon roads to drive on and quite a few nice days. This car will not be a DD though, just something to take out to get the adrenaline flowing! As far as price, I have seen the 930's from 20-25k and the carreras 15-20k. The cheaper car leaves more money for mods!

I went through this delima a few years back - just my observations on the subject :
#1 The 930 has 4 speeds - four tall speeds - Sure the boost part was fun - but the lag was evident - even wiith a few that I drove with an updated turbo
#2 All the turbos I found were either wrecked (or had stories) or prsitine original and garage queens (and pricey)
#3 The ones with adjustable boost scared me - how long at high boost, how high - see the meth comment.
86, 87 and 88 had bigger dash vents - but the AC still sucks -
Take a regular carrera to the track - I promise it will take you a awhile before you feel like you are driving the wheels of it.
Oh - and just for the record - porsche HP aint cheap.

Cool, as far as a weekend toy only, and you having experience with turbo's, I say go for the 930. Assuming you will do your homework and buy the best example you can afford, how can you beat the looks and sounds of the turbo? Nobody buys a 20 or 30 yr. old Porsche for the low maintenance cost or a LeSabre ride, so go for the one that will have you going out to garage late at night just to make sure it really is all yours Either way, I don't think you will be dissapointed. Welcome to Rennlist, you will get a lot out of a membership here, looking forward to the pics.

For your Turbo budget, I would consider a 993. Same or better performance as older Turbo (282 HP), awesome A/C, has all the benifits of a newer 911 & no lag. Nuff said...

One more thing, I had a 1989 Carrera prior to the 993. I absolutely loved the car (still do) but the power was all but impressive. The top end wasn't bad but it lacked the "getup'n go" that the 930 or 993 will deliver. This is alot of why I moved up. Unless low end torque is unimportant, you may not be satisfied.

I have a 79 930, and a 85 RoW cab. The Carrera makes a much better daily driver as the clutch is much lighter and rides much better (both cars have Bilsteins). The 930 is just a beast and the turbo boost hits you hard. It is a great weekend car if that is what you want.

I had an 85 Carrera for about 4 years, and then sold it to buy a beautiful 35k mile 76 930. It took me about a week to regret my decision, just from the driveability point of view (and I had 12 years of SCCA and vintage racing experience). And then the 930 promptly sucked up about $11k over the next few years.
4 gears is not enough for a 150 mph car.
I traded it a few months ago for an equally low mileage 84 Carrera Targa, and I am glad to be back. The non-turbo Carreras are simple to drive, and simple to repair.
