930 vs 911 (1st post)

A different price range, but are the 1989 930's with 5 speeds a noticably better driving experience? I'd imagine so, but I've always wondered if it was a "huge" difference vs just another gear.....
That is a car I thought of- an '89 5-speed cab- yes it may seem counter to have a cab and the 930, but man what a car!

And then the 930 promptly sucked up about $11k over the next few years.
4 gears is not enough for a 150 mph car.
I traded it a few months ago for an equally low mileage 84 Carrera Targa, and I am glad to be back. The non-turbo Carreras are simple to drive, and simple to repair.

That is interesting, I haven't heard many regrets for 930 owners.

I've had both an '84 euro 3.2 Carrera and I still have the 85 euro 930 I use as an almost daily driver. They're both great cars in their own ways and both have "quirks." Neither has a gearbox that's easy to shift. I like the five on the 3.2 but the 4-speed on the 930 isn't any problem either. The 3.2 has instant on torque and power, the 930 definitely has turbo lag, but once its on its seriously "If you aren't paying attention I'm going to kill you" quick. The 3.2 is a little lighter on its feet than the 930, especially since neither have power anything. Both have excellent brakes (as you'd expect from a Porsche).
You can't go wrong with either in my opinion.

Both cars are so raw, you should really enjoy either one based on your interests.... The 930 will certainly provide the adrenaline rush that you seem to crave...

this has been said before, but I would buy the absolute best example I could find of either one......my 85 carrera, with cat bypass, SW chip, M&K is a great canyon carver, since it has good torque @ the low end, where you would use it most...a 930 in a curvey canyon/road might not be show it's power well, and may even be more dangerous if that boost sneaks up on you in early apex on a cliff road.
NA 911s are also easier and cheaper to maintain, and if the power wasn't enough, lighten'er up a couple 100 lbs is super-easy
if you lived in the mid west where the roads were flat, straight, and open, i'd go for a 930 so you could enjoy it most....

Don't know what levels of traffic you face daily, but I owned a '77 930 Turbo Carrera (the white car on the cover of my book) for many years. Even after modifying the car with: A sport intercooler w/3.3 Liter tail, variable boost, exhaust work, an '86 Carrera 5-speed w/LSD and other goodies, with a boost point at about 3700 rpm the car was just too frustrating to drive daily. I absolutely loved that car, but it quickly became a weekend toy that I could drive far away from commuter traffic. Just something to consider...

I owned a 77 930 that was quite fast 150+. I don't regret owning it except for the fact that it scared me. It was just stupid fast and when the boost kicks in hold on. If it happens at the wrong time there is nothing that you can do, you are backwards in an instant. I now have a 69 911 t with 3.0, carbs and aggressive sprint cams. It too is powerful and has a good kick, but is so much easier to predict what it's going to do and a lot more reliable. Take this for what it's worth from a driver who is somewhere between beginner and intermediate skill level. I would have to say that the 930 is an expert's car because of the lag and then the violent kick right after.

If its an old, stock 930 you will immediately want to put headers, better turbo, and exhaust on from day one. Do that and lag is no longer an issue. A properly set up early 930 will walk by, kick, and then disappear from a Carrera or 993. The 4 speed is fine for road use, you will find yourself driving around in 3rd gear all the time though.. I believe mine will run from 50-130 in 3rd... on the track of course. I'm having a G50 5 speed installed as I type this though, more gears the better for my use.
BTW, a Euro has 300 HP right out of the box, you may consider looking for an 80+ Euro 930..

For sure, that is why I love turbo cars, they are soo fun to tweak. Isn't it written down somewhere that you have to upgrade exhaust the day you get a turbo?

I looked at a couple 993's online, I dunno I would love to have the a/c from it but I like the little older cars for my taste.

I know what you mean, Denver traffic kinda sucks...nothing like Cali though...I mean some days I wished I had a nice automatic transmission camry or something to sit in traffic...then I suck it up and listen to the sound of my blow off valve and everthing gets better!
