Well my confusion is this. I plan to take work in Sweden next year, this should allow me to get the Porsche I have wanted for the last 34 years.
My lines of thinking are:
SC or 3.2L modded slightly and on a lil diet for a nice power to weight ratio
or
A nice 86-88 930 slightly modded
I will also need a nice daily drive as I will be selling the current family cars when I leave the U.S. I like the idea of an 03 MB E55 when I return, which might make the 930 a lil hard to manage financially.
Now I like the idea of a crisp NA P-car with enough grunt to put a grin on my face, and with an E55 in the garage for when I need sick power, I just wonder what combinations people here are running and what the costs were.
I guess I was kinda lookig for a big bore roll call

If it were me, I would install a 3.6 Varioram engine into an SC and put the car on a diet.
That makes an amazing power-to-weight ratio and fullfills the yearn for a "big-block" car with tire shredding torque,.......
Not cheap, but there is nothing better in the realm of N/A cars and its a lot quicker than most turbocharged ones.

That was kinda what I was thinking, From what little I have seen I think you could do the motor swap for 15K plus the cost of an SC, So maybe a total cost of 25K not including any upgrades to the suspension and brakes and such... still a good 10K under the cost of a stock well cared for 930... Hmmmm

2000wrx...had an 05 STI, pushing 380hp up until last sept. I do miss the car but since purchased an Audi A3 for the commuter car and a 82 911 witha 3.2L (euro), turbo brakes, Fiberglass front end. Drove the car for the first time yesterday.......as I pulled into the driveway I had a huge grin on my face....Im so glad I went back to german cars. If you can,keep the subie, they are truly great cars but unfortunately the driving experience cant compare to one of these, this 911 is a such huge jump from my track prepped 944. Good luck and keep your eyes open. I picked up this car for 12g. New tranny and clutch. Engine is bullet proof so i hear.

Better budget ALOT higher than that.

Yea, but I would rarely consider a car as an inversment... they are for fun.
I would think that 25K should get you in the ballpark... The swap should be 15Kish and you should be able to find a less than perfect SC for under or around 10K
Then again for 35K I can buy a 930, but I better not mod it or I will shoot the resale value of the car... Hmmmm I just don't know what I will do.

There are VERY few of these older cars; 911's or 930's, that are in perfect condition anymore needing nothing at all. 930's in particular tend to get abused and the cost of repairs oftentimes exceeds what a person paid for it. Needless to say, those are no bargains.
A properly modified SC or Carrera can hold its value VERY well but it all depends on the quality of the execution. I see so many hack jobs where corners were cut to save money that ensures there will not be good cost recovery.
Several of our 3.6-powered conversions have appeared in Excellence and those cars hold their resale extremely well due to the level of preparation. I've also seen several cars done by individuals that equalled or better what we do in our shop so I know it can be done right,....
Its not about WHAT you do, its all about HOW you do it,....

Steve, That I would agree. the ones I have seen are powerfull but are rela hacks with wiring harnesses and sensor leads hanging everywhere.
Of course it depends on what people are looking for in a car also ...

I understand the purist point of view of a numbers matching car. When my 2.7 melted down after a joyous 130,000 miles i was in a quandry. I went for the conversion. Today, there is no way i would sell this car or trade it for ANYTHING, including a GT3. I am a National PCA Instructor and have an SCCA competition license, so i have sampled a lot of machines. There is nothing like the 7.2 lbs/ hp ratio in a well set up 3.6 conversion/suspension/ brakes etc...With the help of Steve Weiner @ Rennsport Systems, the financial hemohrage has been kept at a minimum...LOL! I have a grin on my face EVERY time i get in the car, and it has not worn off in four years of active street and track driving.

With the low weight of the earlier cars, the 3.6 motors pack a lot of punch. I paid $3,500 for my tub. The rest of the costs are, uh, none of your business. (Actually, I've never added everything up.)
