Default Tire Feedback

I have been looking for a set of tires to fit Fuchs rims, 9 x 16 and 7 x 16's. They are for my 88 Targa.

There are limited choices due to the rear size, 245/45-16's, so I have narrowed it down to a few choices and was wondering if anyone has used these tires.

Avon Tech M500 or Toyo T1R's.

I have read a bunch of good reviews on these tires and wanted to know if anyone on the site has tried them, or might have a better suggestion.

I am looking for quiet tires, good handling, not too hard, decent wear, and a reasonable price. The car is not for the track, I like to drive it somewhat hard, but like to hear the engine over the tires. BF Goodrich G Force are toooooo loud (have them on the 928), Bridgestone SO3's are far too expensive, Bridgestone RE750's are good (have them on my 993), but they are on backorder for the rear tire size.

Comments?

Thumbs up for Toyos. I have them on my 911 & my Bimmer. Aggressive tread. Good wet or dry. Very hard to break loose imho. Ignored by many because Tire Rack does not sell them. I like them & would buy again.

Bridgestone RE950s are my favorite all-season ultra-high perf tires if you can find them.

I ran 17" Toyo T1-S's before the R's came out on my old SHO. Very quiet under normal conditions, grippy when needed. Used them as Rains at Road Atlanta instead of the V700s & they gave decent audible feedback as you got closer to the break point. Wear was acceptable (I got 15k before selling the wheels & tires; they had another 10k on them if lucky).

I have also heard fairly decent things about the Avons too, FWIW.

I'm on my second set of T1-R's not bad for the money. I too had limited choices, I had
same size as you, now I'm running 17's with the T1-R's
I find the sidewalls are a bit on the soft side for serious hard use, the wear rate is very good
as is the ride quality, excellent daily driver tire.

I have an '87 Coupe that is fairly stock (16x7&8 Fuchs / rear Bilsteins / Euro ride height / moderately lightened) - had the Avons and was pleased w/ the price-perf. Quiet, consistent behavior, stable to the limit - a bit "square" until they warm up (nylon construction), even like the tread style - old school. Good for all-around, all-yr driving - used em at a DE to decent effect. Now have Br Potenza RE050A - excellent perf tire - got em on sale at TR a few months ago - expect them to wear quickly (rated 140), but only put about 4K /yr on the car these days.

I just installed the Yokohamas yk520 and I can not believe the difference from the Michelins. I thought my rear bearings were going bad until I switched tires. No road noise. I have an 87 Carrera and drive it 70 or 80 a day. I noticed the last set of High Dollar Michs do not last. I was looking for something with more tread wear because of the miles I drive, the yokos were perfect! I didn't need Z rated I only drive it street. The tread wear was 520. I love the quite drive. Any one else driving these tires, let me know.

Yeah, I was going to suggest Yokohama's, too.
Think there are still some of those Yoko AVS available in 16's for right about $100.
I've heard decent things about both that Avon & Toyo.
Not a whole lot to choose from nowadays...

Great, thanks for the suggestions and the feedback.

My tire guy, Perfect Performance (Roswell GA), who can get most tires, really avoids the Avon's, but likes the Toyo's. I guess he would supply me with the Avon's if I demanded them, but he thought they were not always round (a little square as the other person mentioned).

I was leaning towards the Toyo's, but like the old school treads on the Avons. If the more aggressive tread on the Toyo's is quiet, then they should work fine for me. The Yoko's weren't available in the size I needed (at least not right now).

I use this guy because he does the high speed balance with the tires/ wheels on the car, and it really makes a difference...so I let him have a shot before going to anyone else.

my car has the same feel at 80 and 110. I have never been able to hear my tires over the sound of the wind over my rag top. warm them up and I chicken out long before they do. go toyo.
