Default battery

I was ready to take my car out of storage and found that my second Diehard Battery died over the winter. I had a Porsche trickle charger on the car, but the connection must have come loose. Anyway, I have lost faith in Diehards. Anybody have another battery recommendation, or are they all basically the same?

Interstate. I only have to tap the key and it fires. I sell to several of there distribution centers in so cal and one of the G.M.'s told me it is there top of the lines and is the O.E.R. for mercedes. it has the vent line built in. my car had it when I got it. (that and the toyo's) some of the guys here love drycells for racing, but mine is strictly weekends.

I just upgraded to an Optima Red Top. Great battery, but it is smaller and requires some modification to secure it. I also had good luck with, believe it or not, the Kirkland-brand battery from Costco.

Yeah, the Odyssey batteries are nice and some are extremely powerful, but they're a pain to secure because the are basically just square.
Red top Optimas are nice and the yellow ones are 'deep cycle' which I like more.
Usually, need a plate to bolt these to first to mount though.

If you have a Costco near you, the Kirkland (Costco house brand) batteries they sell are terrific and very reasonably priced. They fit perfectly, and no installation modifications are needed. And, IIRC, the warranty is something like 100 months. Best bang for the buck I've found.

YMMV.

Good luck!

Battery life depends on many things, including the shelf storage time. Sometimes, these batteries will sit on the shelf for months at a time.

They should be able to give you a pro-rated money back or replacement battery, but if you're done with DieHard, then consider the following:

1.) Odyssey
2.) Optima

Put an Odyssey in my 88. It was pricey considering the billet mount, ect., but solved my battery problems. My car sits for up to two weeks before I can run it. The Odyssey seems to be holding up fine.

I've had problems in the past with Red-tops, though some swear by them.

When a car battery is left discharged for a long period of time it can take days for a charger to bring it back to "life".

Good point. And a small trickle charger/maintainer likely won't do the job at all once the battery has gone completely dead. You might try buying (or borrowing) a full-size charger and let the battery charge for a day or two to see if you can "bring it back to life."

Hi Scott, is there a particular model # of the Costco Kirkland battery that is the right fit?
Thanks,

Thanks to all. I did try charging the battery with a full size charger, but kept getting a message that it was too far gone to accept the charge. I ended up buying the Interstate Megatron Plus/85 Months. Diehards may be Ok, but I have not had the best of luck with them. The local Porsche tech agreed with Douglas and suggested the Interstate. Works fine so far, let's see how it cranks in the Spring after sitting through the winter. I'll be more careful to make sure the trickle charger is working this winter.
