Default Project #2: Leaky Hoses------COMPLETE!

Ok I will try to get pictures up soon but when a PPI was done on my car I was told 5 hoses need to be replaced. The mechanic wasn't very clear as to where these hoses were and didn't point them out to me so if you guys can't help me out I may have to pour oil into the engine and drive it to MY mechanic and have him help me.

This is all I was told.

2 Oil Cooler Lines (said to be in the front of the car)

1 Hose from the thermostat to the oil tank

1 Hose from the thermostat to the engine

1 Hose that is the "suction hose for the engine"

???? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Nobody knows anything about this? By the way my pet peeve about jack stands, that little tab they ask you to hammer in so the bar doesn't come out anymore. After hammering away at it I always get a 3-legged jackstand because it sits with the 4th leg a little about ground. When the jack stand is supporting the car at the front jack point (little tube with the curved cover) and you try to jack up the other side of the car it pulls the car off the jack stand. Luckily for me I noticed it pulling and caught it in time to see my jack stand on 2 legs and I quickly lowered and stabilized the car. Now I have to go buy two more, theyre not expensive but I just returned a malfunctioning set today and driving to home depot one more time is going to drive me insane. Now I have 8 jack stands!

Here are the part #s and the descriptions from pelican: It's going to take some research to go look these up so I can see if they REALLY need replacing because two of the hoses are quite expensive.

Tab for whole job: $242

Do I need to buy new gaskets and seals? What do I coat them with when installing? Grease or motor oil? I'm such a newbie

Actually no, I found parts diagrams on Pelican, I will try to find them and take pictures and then I might need help from you guys on whether they actually need replacing or not. Thanks J.Brinkley.

anytime, just ask. those two from the front cooler to the hard lines in the pass fron wheel well are a bear. make sure you need them before you go after it. Pipe wrench and 15 and 18" crecsent wrenchs and a torch work best, at least i think so, its been a while, a 12" might fit them, cant remember

After a 10 minute inspection I see that my oil lines look fine all the way from the tank to the engine and to the oil cooler. I don't know what this mechanic was talking about but hey what do I know I'm just a silly mechanical engineer, he's the professional. Pictures to come. I did see one leaky hose but I was aware of this when I bought the car. Like I said photos to come and then maybe you guys can shed some light on the issue.

The problem with hoses is pictures don't tell 90% of the story.for example is the hose to the bottom of the tank ( the big fat momma , soft and pliable or is it hard as a freaking rock ..... ??? feel has a lot to do with it ..

Its fairly soft. Like I said I just did a quick run-over, once the digital camera is charged after lunch I will take close ups and try to feel the hoses and bend then if I can to check for cracks you cant see via pictures. I'll post right after I do that.

The two oil cooler lines at the front of the car are undoubtedly the flexible lines that connect the hard lines to the oil cooler in the front passenger fender well. 2 braided lines about 6 inches long. They are probably seeping oil slowly without causing drips from the car. Are the braids soaked with oil? Have a close look at them and decide whether it's worth your time and money to replace them. They don't cost that much actually.

Yea the 2 in the front, I know exactly what you are talking about I have located all the hoses. The two in the front are only 25 dollars each. However two of the lines are 80 and 90 dollars, those are the ones I want to be sure are leaking before I replace them.

Ok it seems that the oil line from the thermostat to the engine oil line has a problem, and that line is 100 dollars. Its also safe to say that the oil line from the thermostat to the oil tank is also problematic. Those two lines are the bulk of the cost (summing up to upwards of 190 dollars). I believe that replacing the rubber hoses at the oil cooler and the big fatty (engine suction hose ...oil tank to engine) only costs 60 more dollars for all 3 hoses. I will replace all 5 just for peace of mind. Might as well spend $250 dollars than have a hose break and my engine fry (being a little dramatic). So can I disconnect all the lines I need to or are there certain precautions I should be taking? .....other than draining the oil.
