So some years ago I had a euro '85 as a daily driver. I loved it, but foolishly thought I needed more power. I sold the car with no hesitation to my best friend and bought a pristine, 36k mile '76 930. It was beautiful to look at, but I never really enjoyed driving it much (1200 miles in 3 years). Then I bought a '99 GT-3 clone with 7k miles, and although it did everything perfectly and comfortably, I never got attached to it and only did 11k miles in 3 years.

I started bugging my buddy to sell me my old Carrera back at any price, as it was so thoroughly sorted out by someone I trust (me). He said no, but eventually called his lawyer and had me put in his will to inherit the car.

Then I bought a pair of 356's - one street car, one very prepared race car. I brought the street car up to excellent condition, and found it to be nice to look at but really boring to drive - kind of a rolling roadblock with 80hp. So I sold it to my buddy again. But the race 356 is a lot of fun - a 160HP Ecurie engine in a 1700lb car.

But today I found a one owner, pristine '84 Targa with 39k miles. The PO spent a ton of money on it 7 years ago, including an expensive engine rebuild by Andial with nice cams. It's now in my garage and the 930 is gone.

I can't begin to tell you how great it is to be back in a Carrera. Mid '80s 911 are really the quintessential Porsches, IMHO. Reasonable power, handling that takes some skill to fully appreciate, and tons of personality.

I parted with an 85 Carrera, not realizing how much I loved it. Replaced it with a 996 -- fast but without the thrill, so I sold it with no regrets. Now, I have an 81 SC, and she makes me smile again! I'm thinking about a 993, not to replace, but to compliment the SC. If I couldn't love the 996, can I love the 993?

No, it's very sad here. I live two hours from Blacksburg, and a number of young people in my neighborhood go to Virginia Tech. Fortunately all of them are ok. It still seems like a bad dream.

Great looking car. And it's a Targa (gotta love the Targa). I hope to add a 993 to the mix, as l just can't be without my 88' Targa! Enjoy your new addition.

ah....i can relate...I love my 85 carrera! I have to admit I do long for other cars with more power, but seem to come to my senses when i realize not many have the "excitement" a mid 80s Carrera can give you...so many cars, so little time (and money)....I think i'll stick to my "girl" that gives me a great big smile every single time I drive her.

the sound, the feel, the experience. It doesn't need to have gobs of power to be magical. If you know how to drive it and get the most from it nothing is more rewarding. Believe me, I track a 912 with maybe 115hp and I still seem to be at the sharp end of my run group.

I just test drove a 993 C4S and it just doesn't deliver the same 'connected' feel of my Carrera. The heavy clutch/steering, valve/exhaust note. It looks great from the outside and the inside. It is the real deal package.

I really enjoy my 88 Carrera Coupe. It's my 19th Porsche since 1968. I have owned everything from a '57 356 Normal to a 928. Although I have not owned a 993, 996, nor a Turbo 911, I have driven them and don't get the same "thrill" as with my 88. It has 119,800 mile on it and it seems to run better the longer I drive it. I recently cleaned and refurbished the injectors and it feels like a new car.

I have an 84 euro Carrera 3.2 Coupe, I understand your love with it. Its a great car. I also have a 85 euro 930 Coupe. Its my almost daily driver. I love it too, for different reasons than I love the 84, but I still love it. Rounding out "the family" is a 2002 996TT Coupe. I love it too. Again for different reasons and characteristics than the other two. The bottom line, I haven"t met a Porsche I didn't love for some reason or another.

Everyone associated with Virginia Tech has my sympathy and support. Sad how one individual's problems can affect a whole nation. Go Hokies!

all these great attributes.....and on top of that way reliable compared to so many classic sports cars. my travels started with an old MGB roadster and improved significantly to the fine 1984 carrera targa......a nice counterpoint to your black/black by the way.

i bought my 996 about 4 years ago and sold my dad my 88 carerra. i always missed it and finally bought it back last year. There is a rawness and sports car feel that the 996 will never have. It may be the best overall sports car ever made. IMHO. But i am glad i have a 996 when it is 95 degrees...
