Default Sunroof or not

Finally I started working on my project ('71 911T) again, and making progress. I will post some pictures soon. I removed the sunroof and all the hardware and motor. I'm thinking to remove the inside sheet metal box and weld the sunroof. This would eliminate any leaking issues down the road.

Did someone do this before ?

That is a lot of work. But it will be nice when you're finished. I guess your question about the sunroof depends on resale vs. your preference. Not sure if it will affect resale or not, but a sunroof is nice to have.

sunroof seems to be a nasty word in this forum, I find the 911 cabin quite confined, claustrophobic and open my sunroof every chance I get, the last thing I would want to do is weld it up.

I'm opposite - I find the 911 to have a roomy cabin compared to some cares I've had. The sunroof just adds weight, noise, complication and I almost never use it.

To each his own.

i'd remove the hardware and motor but not go so far as welding it up

that way it can be returned to standard if need be

mine is always open as are both windows...i like to listen to the exhaust

There are pros & cons, for sure. The Targa adds lots of noise, but not too much weight and complication. It also adds water (leaks), not to mention rattles. But I do like it when it's 78 degrees and sunny. So does my girl.

I used to have a targa. I loved it. Never had the top on. Those coupe owners ( I have one now) that think that with windows down and the sunroof open it's "just like a targa" are crazy. Targas are cool and so are the coupes but diferant species of the same animal. I would definately own a targa again and probably will. One last observation..my targa top was never on and yet my sunroof is never open. Figure out that riddle

I love my sunroof and open it almost all the time. Gives a good flow of fresh air and allows you to enjoy the engine noise a little more as well. If building a track car then get rid of it but for a street/pleasure car I would keep it.

Thanks for all the input !

Since I want to build this one for autocross in the prepared class, I'm not realy think about re sell value. However, I have also a 912 waiting and I wish the suroof would be on that one.

I even tought for a second to switch the roof. since I like to rebuild the 912 to a nice daily driver.

On this one I will put on the RS flares and front and rear bumper and 7 and 8 x15 wheels. I'm not sure about the suspension, torsion bars or coilovers?

I will post more pictures as I progress.

Thanks

S Bruce Andreson puts it .... the Garden Variety Targa is readily available...

I wonder if it i more of an availability issue... I have a Targa and love it . It is never in the car unless raining. Although I get a ton of rattles and wind noise I will put up with it for the days I can take it out. The only really annoying wind noise seams to come from the drivers door towards the front ..although Targa wind noise could be a thread all on it's own !!!!!.
