I have to say I love this 911. Its the first car that I have regularly smacked the revlimiter in 5 gear. This car seems to do it easily.........Are most older 911's this way? My 928 would take for ever to get to 140....

my Sc was way to funky over 120....my 84 928S would go go go if I let her...150 was the most for me in that...both the 86 and 89 951s went so fast I actually got younger driving them....as for the Carrera...well when I get to the big D in about 10 days we'll have to hunt some back roads and see what Mr S. Wong and the tune up have done....

What's your speed when revving out in 5th?

My 928 just shifts into 4th at 140, pulling like a train.

Back in the day, the thing to do, re bragging rights, was snap a pic of the speedo clocking 145 mph. What that equates to in real mph, dunno - less maybe 10% speedo error (optimistic reading) I've read (which woud be an actual 130.5) mph. Oh well, it's really about the handling anyway, innit?

I was only ever to get my 84 max out at about 135 on the back straight at Watkins Glen.

I've had my Euro 84 3.2 out to 145mph in 5th and still pulling hard. That's an indicated 145mph but I think the speedos are a little optimistic....

That won't be much ..... I'd much rather accept someones word for it than see tham try to click at 150+ MPH .. I have a Magellan explorist GPS and stick it on my windshield .. super accurate and the heads up for speed is WAY better.. these things are getting cheaper and cheaper now ..

My 85 3.2 Carrera in 5th gear, 5000rpm showing around 135 mph. Engine pulling strong and sound of the engine is excellent. I won't trying much harder , it's an 21 years old car !!!!

The euros do have a few more horses than the US version. But you're right the speedo may be a little optimistic.

FWIW - ascertain what gear ratios you have and plug them into this nifty little calculator. Then check it against what your speedo actually reads (not laboratory accuracy but the discrepancy may surprise you).

There's a reason why they make you tape over your speedo @ racing (bike/car) schools. Not too hard to figure why........ I do like 'Iceman', throw the GPS in there and it logs top speed reached. Or better yet get one of those G-tech devices. I saw a demo, not bad. My top speed was on route 65 north and south bound in Alabama crossing the Tennessee river. Pegged in 5th, how fast? fast enough..... Had my bike flat out in 6th indicated 175 with no possibility to reach redline in top gear. At these speeds, your ride better be top notch. All of a sudden things you never think about become very important. Like tie rods, lug nuts, wheel bearings, (chains, sprockets) tire pressures, dampers......blah blah blah. All I know is, I can scare the wits out of most newbies by 3rd gear :-)
