Performance Chips on E-Bay
I did a search..cameup empty. But has anyone purchased/installed the $25 performance chips they sell on E-Bay. I know, I know Steve Wong but just curious if anyone went this route and what kind of feedback.

Here's my view on this,....
Given the financial consequences of poorly programmed software, its just foolish to buy such things. If one is on a budget, then leave the ECU as-is and keep the Porsche chips which are just fine. Its not worth taking a chance.

They are not performance chips, at least the ones I have seen. They bypass the map/tps to WOT, at least the one I saw. Instant check engine light IMHO.

This is somewhat related, but doesn't have to do with a Porsche. But, it should prove a point. I have a co-worker that is an IT person and he insists on messing with his stock ECU in his '91 Pontiac Firebird equipped with a 305 V8. He had a couple vendors "custom burn" him a chip for about $50 a piece. Each promised "increased HP and Torque". He also has an interface for a laptop that will track all of the performance data that is output from the cars sensors and computer.
He found that these chips just increase the timing and change the fuel mapping and found his car knocked severely from 2000 to 3000 rpms. After swapping out two of these chips with the stock chip, he found that the stock chip seemed to give the best data (meaning least likely to hurt the engine in the long run). After all his tinkering, he's back to the stock chip since that gives the best all around performance for street driving.

That's the reality for ALL performance chips/tuning on stock engines. Like, the factory engineers
didn't know how to maximize performance, right.

IIRC, Factory upped spec on later Carreras, and upped it again for the Club Sport, chipwise.
Being conservative, and holding something back is a bit of a Porsche hallmark. They do tend to release the Uber version of a model at the end of it's production cycle after all.
As for chips, I'm pretty sure you get what you pay for. Seems like a lot of satisfied SW users, and I assume they have access to good quality premium... YMMV

As far as I know Loren does not sell chips. In fact he seems to be very Anti-Chip. When he rebuilt my DME and Alternator he suggested that I remove the performance which which was in my DME (a chip I never even knew about).
Try checking out his website he's a very smart guy and its worth taking his advice on these matters. He knows his DMEs.
