Default Odd loud high pitched noise

Folks,

Hoping someone can help me out. Vehicle is a 1985 911 coupe. Just yesterday when the key is turned to the accessories position a very loud high pitched squeel is heard......seems to eminate from the left side of the engine if you're standing at the back of the car and looking towards the tail.

The car starts fine and the noise will continue for app. 4-10 seconds then go away. Since it occurs prior to cranking I can't imagine it's starter related. It actually sounds like some kind of small motor or blower is seized up (I was thinking sunroof) but it disappears so quickly and abrubtly.

I'm kind of baffled. Any ideas?

Sounds like the heater blower.

Yes, the heater blower. It is very easy to get to in order to unplug it or to even remove it.

3rd on the blower ... try lowering the levers in the car and see if it stops.

Sounds like my wife. If it is preceded by a sharp digging sensation in your right fore arm, than it's defianely my wife.

Oceanview,
I'll check but I don't think your wife is here......I get the same pain only in my left forearm as my wife is usually driving and I'm on the passenger side.

Anyway we moved the levers and the noise doesn't change. Just looked in the Bentley manual and the heater blower motor looks way to easy to remove and replace. So I guess I'll just unplug it and see if the noise dissappears.

Now here's a really novice question but can the car be driven with the heater blower motor discontected or does it also serve some type of engine cooling function?

Thanks for all the help

You can drive the car, but won't have any forced air from it since it will be removed. I would make sure the electrical plug is taped off so you don't get an accidental short.

I haven't had a chance to get to the car yet to disconnect the heater blower motor yet but one thing troubles me. I like the blower motor idea as the scream sounds like what I've heard when my Volvo blower motor went south. But why would the blower motor scream with the key only in the accessory position? Does this blower run continuously?

It shouldn't run unless there is a lever with a switch in the on position. Just unplug the power to it and see if it shuts it off. If the bearings are going out or need lubrication and the unit has power, it will sing to you. I think I remember mine did this a long time ago and I tore it apart and re-greased the bearing areas and it's worked OK. Once it fails, you gotta get a new one. I'd suggest trying to fix it prior to it failing. Won't hurt to try. Good luck. Happy Holidays.

In those red levers, there is a switch that signals the relay in the rear engine compartment. If that switch is stuck on, or the relay is stuck on, that blower will always run - and it should not always run. There are only 2 times the blower will run. One is when you turn on the heat with those red levers. The other time is if the engine compartment temperatures get extremely hot (very rare).

I recommend reading the following article on the ventilation controls:

Thanks to all those who provided valuable advise. I finally had time to get out to the car today. Had my wife turn the key while I had my hand on the heater blower motor......it screamed and buzzed.......mystery solved. Does anyone know where I can obtain a used one? Car is an '85.
thanks

Parts Heaven in Hayward , CA (www.partsheaven.com, 1-800-767-7250) or Oklahoma Foreign in Moore, Okla (www.oklahomaforeign.com, 1-800-462-2446). You might try a request from the Pelican folks or on Rennlist.com to see if anyone close has a good one.

But as pointed out it should not be on unless the levers are up ,,, I would fix tha problem first as this may kill the new one too...
