Porsche Cars North America (or whoever determines what standard equipment to put on a car) is not stupid either and I'm sure they are equipping the new 911's with standard sunroofs because they know that the vast majority (if not 99.9%!) of new 911 buyers just plain want a sunroof. Why fight with the buying public on that stuff...

My "Amen" comment would have been flamed quite a bit on the 997 board I bet... And, I bet there are older 911 owners that simply would not live without their sunroof on their cars. That's fine too. I admit that I open my roof on both my coupes from time to time.

I know when I first bought my first 911, I wanted the leather, sunroof, and all that stuff. Now, after dealing with these cars for so long, I would much prefer cloth seats, no sunroof, etc., etc.

It's interesting that the 997 GT3 comes with a sunroof and the sunroof can not be deleted. This annoys those who want to buy one...

I bet this all comes down to minimizing production costs. Maybe Porsche thinks why should they bother with the added expense of not having a sunroof in a limited production model such as the GT3. I bet they figure that the GT3 will sell just as quick with or without a sunroof.

Again only for the American market version of the 997 GT-3. The ROW market standard version GT-3 does not have the sunroof, but it's an option. IMHO it should never have been considered part of the GT-3 program, but that is just me.
Jay is right, they will sell/lease the limited production run with the sunroof in the USA regardless. I suspect most will be leased initially with the purchasers coming into the market a few years down the track.
Ciao,
Adrian.

PS: I also forgot to mention the other reason I don't like holes in the roof is because they can leak.
There are more than enough ways for water to get inside any Porsche model and a sunroof is just too much encouragement for interior watersports.

...and how many times have we seen the case where the US market doesn't even get the nicest seats either due to regulations in place in the US...

I feel that non sunroof cars should almost bring a premium! Less weight at the wrong place, less stupid stuff to break, etc.
Couldnt have said it better myself, Bring on the premium $$$$.

You area also quite right Jay, there are very very few coupes here in Australia without a sunroof.

Yeah true, but that's not Porsche's fault.
