Some say the redline is 6,500; others say it is 6,300. In any event, I usually shift at 6,000 to ensure that I keep the engine as reliable as possible.
...If you drive it at less than 4000 rpm you're a girly man...
It is commonly said that a flat-6 should be run to redline at least once during a drive. These engines like it when you run them up in the rev range. Just make sure that the engine is warm (after 10 minutes of driving, or if the temperature is at least 176F) before you run the engine above 4,000 RPM. After warmup, the engine makes the most power above 4,000.
If that is the case I would suggest a bottle of Techron and a half a tank of gas...maybe a couple of times.
I did Techron on mine and saw no difference. I think the bottle is very safe to use - meaning that you might need to do it more than a 2 or 3 times. Also, it's pretty expensive at near $15 a bottle here in Chicago. Are there any other recommended fuel treatments that can be used? I have a very slight lumpy idle on my car. I think the fuel injectors need to be cleaned a little better...

...then followed by an oil change. I'd throw a new set of plugs in as well.
Seriously, the previous owner didn't rev it above 4000 rpms??? What's the point of owning a 911 if you don't get the motor up spinnin' in the power band??
Red line is 6250 rpms on the '86. The ignition will cut out when you exceed it to protect the motor and auxillary equipment. Porsche recommends (from the owner's manual) that you don't rev a cold motor above 4400 rpms.

Techtron seems to be well regarded in the Porsche world. If Techtron didn't help your idle issue, other additives may not either. I've had good experience with Techtron in other motors for helping with stuck valves and such, so it's good stuff.
Yup did Techron Last night the 20 gal treatment Willl do this now for several tanks. Techron massively improved my 928. what a difference after 2 tanks.

I'll run it through again. If that doesn't do it, I might not even have a problem at all!
