Default Speedo Replacement Question/Bad news

I am still doing my PPI of the 86 Cab Mechanically it is sound. Has a broken oil level wire, leaking shifter seal, other then that looks VERY good.

I pulled a carfax and found that there was a warning for a rolled back speedo.

After digging through the receipts it appears that a Dealreship in 1989 replace the broken Speedo when it had 17k showing......All other receipts show very little usage the average would be 5500 per year.

I originally thought this car had 93k on it and now it looks as though it has 110,000?

Would the Porsche Dealersship have started the replacement ODO at 17k or started it out at 0?

How would you say this effect a price of 17,000.
Down to what?
What would you consider

In 89, I believe that the dealer would keep the odometer at 0 and put a sticker on the door jamb that attests the milage at the time of replacement. At least thats what we did on old Dodges back then. Nowadays, the milage is burned in by computer.

As far as value, 17k isn't a whole lot of difference for a street car. Since the speedo is repaired and the engine checks out good, I figure you should try for 1,000 off and settle somewhere around 500. I think you have more to negotiate with other items that are wrong w/ the car.

In this situation, I would go to KBB and compare prices by changing only the mileage. Granted, KBB is not very accurrate with P-cars, but you can use this to negotiate. Also, compare prices on cars.com and PCA. Again, not always completely accurate, but the more information you have, the better you can negotiate.

12% is OK...not great, not too bad. The compression numbers look good and even.

Not being a cab guy myself, I would be looking hard at the condition of it...they are costly to replace. Run it up and down a few times and drive with it up to check it out.

If you are happy, I say go for it....Good Luck

Hell man I have no idea what an 86 cab in this condition goes for. There is not a thing around or recent sales that I can count on..... I have seen some for sale as high as 27K and as low as 14.5 I am just as lost as anybody could be..........I think I will offer 16000 and walk if he doesnt take it

Apparently pretty common - when I was looking for mine I ran into three in a row that had this same issue. Mine actually had the speedometer replaced at 1100 miles. As long as I had the records (which I do) and the owner was up front about it (which they were) who cares.

Oh and BTW - 16-17 is a good price for a driver - was the compression/leakdown done cold? or Warm?
