Default just got car back last night with mods completed

just got my 79sc back late last night with mods completed... just a few happy snaps.
mods include carrera oil cooler, thermo fan, mounting position modified to eliminate scrubbing between the grill and tyre. removed pre muffler, removed fresh air pump and replaced oil return tubes and a few other minor things.

I had a great time checking out their workshop, customer cars and race cars last night. I was very impressed with the quality of work they do and attention to detail. sounds angry now without the pre-muffler

spence,

basically as you can see in the pic, they just cut the muffler out and weld a bit of pipe in. at $200 its a cost effective way of making your exhaust flow a bit better, a little louder, and of course angrier

if you're keen on doing the exhaust you may also want to pay a visit to monty mufflers in melbourne for a rear muffler.

thanks JV, how much is a monty? would you trust a normal exhaust shop to weld in a piece in place of the pre muffler? I'm not even sure if mine has a pre muffler in the same place as I dont get it until friday.

my monty was $800. they've got a good reputation and are heaps cheaper than imported ones like dansk.

any exhaust shop should be able to cut out the pre-muffler...having said that i went to a couple and they didnt want to do it because they "dont work on porsches". i'm still trying to figure out the difference between a straight length of exhaust pipe on a commodore and a porsche???

on SCs and carreras there is an oxygen sensor that screws into the pre-muffler. this may need to be plumbed into the straight pipe, depending on where they cut the original pipe. you can aparently bypass the sensor somehow...this is where a porsche specialist will come in handy

JV911 - i think spences car has a cat with o2 sensor. My SC did not have an O2 sensor. i think that came from 1980 on.

Spence - go for the monty and the straight pipe or even a pre muffler but sounds evil with the straight pipe

VA911,
Is there any adverse affect to a 3.0L by removing the fresh air pump? Or is it just a air quality thing?

no affect other than uncluttering your engine bay and under the car. all this did way pump fresh air into the exhaust.

craig,

if you're in the US i'd check with your mechanic or EPA before removing it. you may not pass the visual exam or smog test without it.

For $200, you're close to buying a legit Pre-Muffler / Bypass setup. Fabspeed's is $260 & is very sharp, has the O2 sensor bung & quality welds. I have one myself, and it's a very functional piece of art. Bolts right in, swap in the cat as necessary.

I believe other companies (Schnell?) have ones that are even cheaper, but I haven't seen them personally.

Yep i've got the Fabspeed pre-muffler and its a really nice bit of gear. However it costs $260US plus postage = almost $400 aussie. So almost twice as much as the other option.
