Default aux. heat

Hey all,

I am a new member here. I recently bought a 73 911T in need of some resto work.Well I am doing what I can for right now to it but trying to not get in over my head so I am only doing little bits at a time.

What I am wondering is I have the auxiliary heat device in my car and it is in need of some work. I have heard this is kinda of a dangerous set up so I dont want to mess with it with out knowing anything about it. I am curious if anybody knows of any good write ups on this system, how to test it, how to make it work properly, and the do's and do not's. Any help is much appreciated

Thanks alot

Ben

I assume you are talking about the Webasto Heater?

early 911's had an optioanl auxillary gas heater. Fairly common in early VW's too! Saw this link and it may help you.

The unit was a Wabasto gas heater. If I remember correctly it was under a vented cover where you access the rear shift linkage. I tried googling it but couldn't find much, other than the VW references. I've only seen one and remember it was really small!

Well I have not done hardly anything with it because I wanted to learn a little about it before i tore into it. I am an Audi tech but I used to work on both Porsche and Audi, then the buildings split.

So some specifics. On the 911 it is in the front compartment area under a panel built in, actually if it helps it is right on the top of the gas tank. I am not really sure how to make it work or anything actually and so far what i am finding is very little info. I dont think this was a very highly liked system. Rumor has it, it burned a few cars to the ground in its day.

Any way, thanks for the help, and if you guys or anybody elce comes up with anything more just keep me intouch, and as soon as I am home from the holidays I will take a few pictures and post them. However I am still new so it may take me a bit to figure out on this forum. I have been on a few other forums before.

From what I've been able to find out, the system works really well and requires a limited amount of maintainence. The only problematic areas seem to be lack of venting! If the area isn't vented well the Webasto overheats and automatically shuts down. I ran a Porsche restoration company for many years in NC and never saw a car with fire damage from the aux. heater! CIS was another story! Hope you have an extinguisher!
