Default Speedometer/Odomoter

Wondering how anyone might handle this...
I have a 1980SC speedometer only goes to 85 MPH, the more I look around the more I see the speedometer should go to around 160 MPH for the year, now the odometer says 138K miles on it and the original owner I bought it from swears thats the real mileage. I really want to change out the speedometer for a 160mph one, but will obviously loose the odometer readings. Granted at 26 years old and counting it means nothing on the title but kinda means something to me.

there a way to reset the odometer on a new speedometer?
Keep the old one to show where it stopped at (for possible resale uses)?
or just dont worry about it and get the 160mph speedometer?

North Hollywood Speedo on Lankershim Blvd in No. Hollywood, CA can replace the face and calibrate it to work properly. They can also clean & lube it at the same time - give them a call, they're great guys!

You must have the only 911 left in America with a 85 mph speedo in it!! Go find yourself a nice 150mph one (nicer looking and less cluttered than the 170 ones with kph as well)--and take it into any competent speedo shop. Tell them what mileage you want it to read. They can handle that easily.

If you change it, you can't tell the officer you were only doing 85! Back in 1983, I got pulled over by an off duty police officer (they can do that in Hawaii) and he said he was giving me a ticket for 85 in a 50 because that was all his speedo would read.

Seriously, is this car unique because of the speedo? I'm just wondering if there is any benefit to at least keeping it as stock as possible and leaving the spedo as is.

It is not unique. Back in the early 80s, car speedos topped out at 85 mph.

Default That was a federal (DOT) requirement ---

My '80 SC still has an 85 mph speedo and, although I've considered changing it, I've now decided to leave it as is. After all, if I'm going more than 85 mph, I'm not going to be looking at the speedometer anyway. For track days (the only time I'm likely to be over 85) I can always figure it out afterwards - like 5,800 rpm in 5th works out to about 125 mph.
