Hi Vincent,
First of all, there are LOTS of recommendations on this in the archives. I'd suggest you grab a drink and read as tires are very personal, and there is much to consider in terms of price, your priorities, how much you drive, encounter wet weather, etc. Check out Tirerack as well for some general recommendations.
Second of all, what the heck is a 255 doing on the rear of your car? Shall I assume you have 16" Fuchs in either an 8" or 9" in the back? Not only is a 255 too wide for either of those rims, a 50 profile is too tall. If you have 8s, then a 225/50 or a 245/45 would be just fine. If you have 9s, then definitely go with the 245/45. For the front, a 205/55 is stock, but if you have 7s, then some fit a 225/50, but many have reported tire scraping and you will then have to roll the fender lips. Hope this helps.

Hi Vincent,
FWIW I have 205 55 VR 16 and 225 50 VR 16 Pirelli p zero nero's on my 81SC since March and I like them alot. I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it. The PO had Pirelli cinturato p7's on there, but they looked like 25 year old tires, so the first thing I did was swap them out. They were on sale at Tire Rack for I think less than $100 or close to that. My car is also a daily driver, or at least semi-daily with dreams of going to it's first DE with me in the spring. They look nice on the car too.

I just bought an 89 911 cab and put on Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S (205/55R16 and 225/50R16) and like the ride. Much smoother than the Bridgestone 730s that came with the car. Tires were $125 / $ 137 in Los Angeles at Globe Tires.

No I just enjoy driving it on the street whenever I can. I chose a tire that is a good dry weather performer but will give me some traction in the wet weather ... and the price was great to boot ! I think I payed about 100.00 each on a clearance from tirerack. I f you really want high performance you can get competition tires, but I am not sure if they are allowed with drivers ed , not sure though, may want to check it out. The reason I was wondering is because someone here was selling a brand new set a few months ago and I think it was because the local club would not allow them.
Anyway I have a set or RE730s on some 16" rims and these on the 17" rims and both feel okay. but I dod not push them to the limit.

After doing a lot of reading here and a lot of research I ended up buying a complete set front/back of Toyo T1R's. I literally just got them and have not had them put on. But if you are like me and are in a NO snow area, the traction on these bad boys looks phenominal for rain and dry, as they are stated and rated to be. I will post more on the tires once I get them mounted, probably this week.

I'm a Michelin Pilot Sport 2 guy myself but if on a budget look into the Kuhmo Z rated series at Tirerack. I'm putting them on my BMW next summer, less than 1/2 the price of the PS2's in the same size.

Vincent,
FWIW, I put 4 Toyo Proxe T1-R on a Carrera about 900 miles ago. Very pleased with their street performance, both wet and dry. Did a DE this past weekend (Summit Point), and was VERY pleased with how they handled on a dry track. Sunday was very wet, and while I broke the car loose about 9-10 times, I think it was due not to any tire deficiency, but my driving. I just bought this car and am adjusting to the higher HP compared to my previous car. Total cost (including shipping) was about $470.
